Celtic-linked Gvidas Gineitis hit by fresh Torino blow

Former Celtic target Gvidas Gineitis could face increased competition for his place in the Torino midfield after being substituted at half-time during the weekend clash with Roma.

The Lithuania international was strongly linked with a move to Celtic during the final stages of the summer transfer window, as the Scottish champions looked to add another midfielder before the deadline.

However, no agreement was reached and Gineitis remained with the Serie A club. The 22-year-old had started each of Torino’s opening six games of the campaign before the Roma match.

His latest performance, though, has prompted questions over whether his position in Paolo Vanoli’s starting XI remains completely secure.

According to Toro News, Gineitis was replaced at the break by Daniel Bragança, with the Portuguese midfielder reportedly providing an added dimension after coming on.

Bragança’s ability to retain possession and operate between the lines has potentially given Torino another option in midfield, putting further pressure on Gineitis to maintain his place.

There has been no indication that Gineitis has officially lost his starting position. He has still been selected from the beginning in every game this season, but the competition for places appears to be increasing as Torino’s summer additions settle into the squad.

Toro News was also critical of some aspects of Gineitis’ recent performances, suggesting that his work rate and willingness to cover ground have not always been matched by the required quality and accuracy in possession.

That development could be of interest to Celtic given their previous attempts to sign the midfielder.

The Hoops were reportedly pushing to bring Gineitis to Parkhead late in the transfer window, but ultimately failed to complete a deal.

Torino were also understood to have been willing to consider offers for the midfielder during the summer, although he eventually remained in Italy.

Gineitis’ next opportunity to respond could come against Bologna. His selection for that fixture may provide a clearer indication of whether Torino continue to trust him from the start or hand Bragança an opportunity to claim the role.

For now, Gineitis remains a regular starter, but the battle for his midfield position at Torino looks increasingly competitive.
