Celtic handed Niko Sigur transfer boost as £3m deal emerges

Celtic could reportedly secure Niko Sigur without having to spend a significant amount, with the Hajduk Split midfielder available for a fee in the region of £3 million.

The Hoops are expected to continue strengthening their midfield this summer, particularly with uncertainty surrounding the futures of Arne Engels and Reo Hatate.

Engels has been linked with a move to West Ham, while Hatate could also depart Parkhead, potentially leaving Martin O’Neill needing additional options in the middle of the pitch.

Celtic have already added Mika Baur to their squad this week, but further recruitment could be required if expected departures materialise.

Sigur has now re-emerged as a potential target after Celtic previously considered a move for the Canada international in January.

The 22-year-old is understood to be available from Hajduk Split for around £3 million, although the Croatian club could attempt to negotiate a higher fee if multiple suitors become involved.

Nevertheless, that valuation is believed to be within Celtic’s reach should the Scottish champions decide to make a formal approach.

Sigur’s versatility is one of the main reasons Celtic remain interested.

The Canada international can operate as a defensive midfielder in the No.6 position, while he is also capable of playing as a No.8. He can even fill in at right-back, although that is not considered his preferred position.

His age is another attraction for Celtic, with the club continuing to prioritise players who can develop and potentially generate a significant future transfer fee.

Sigur also has an existing connection with Celtic defender Alistair Johnston through the Canada national team, which could help him settle quickly should he make the move to Glasgow.

Celtic have already spent close to £25 million during the current transfer window, but their recruitment plans do not appear to be finished.

Torino midfielder Gvidas Gineitis is another player reportedly on the club’s radar as O’Neill looks to ensure he has enough quality and depth in midfield.

With several departures potentially on the horizon, Sigur could represent a relatively affordable option for Celtic while also fitting the club’s longer-term recruitment strategy.
