Celtic handed major Martin O’Neill exit update as termination fee revealed

Martin O’Neill’s future at Celtic has become a major talking point, with former Manchester City financial adviser Stefan Borson suggesting the club would not face a huge financial hit if the manager decided to leave.

Celtic currently sit at the top of the Scottish Premiership after seven matches, but O’Neill has admitted he will take time during the international break to consider his position.

The veteran manager has endured a difficult spell recently, with Celtic suffering three consecutive defeats. Two of those losses came against Rangers in the Old Firm, while the club have also dropped into the Europa League this season.

Those results have raised questions about whether O’Neill could decide to walk away from the job, although there has been no confirmation that he intends to do so.

If Celtic were forced to terminate his contract, however, Borson believes the financial cost would be relatively modest.

Speaking to Football Insider, Borson suggested the club would likely need to pay only a few million pounds to bring O’Neill’s time in charge to an end.

He said: “It’ll be a few million quid to remove him, but he’s on, I would think, a pretty small termination payment.”

For now, O’Neill remains in charge, with his decision over his future expected to be one of the biggest talking points around Celtic during the international break.
