Celtic eye forward as O’Neill sets sights on first transfer deal

Celtic are preparing for a major summer transfer window as they look to strengthen their squad, with reports from French outlet Footmercato suggesting the club have identified a pacey striker as a key target.

The Hoops are expected to undergo significant changes ahead of the new season after an inconsistent campaign that saw multiple managerial shifts before Martin O’Neill eventually steadied the ship and guided the side to the Scottish Premiership title.

Following that late-season revival under the 74-year-old, Celtic are now reportedly planning to offer O’Neill a one-year contract extension to continue in charge for the upcoming campaign, keeping continuity in place after a turbulent year.

With Champions League football on the horizon, attention has quickly turned to strengthening the squad, particularly in attacking areas where added pace and creativity are being prioritised.

According to the report, Celtic’s recruitment team have already begun assessing potential additions, with a view to making early moves in the market.

One name said to be on their radar is Tairyk Arconte of Ligue 2 side Rodez AF. The 22-year-old, who can operate as a winger or centre-forward, is believed to be a leading candidate for the Scottish champions.

Arconte enjoyed a productive season, registering 14 goals and four assists in all competitions. His direct, explosive playing style has been highlighted as a key attribute that could appeal to O’Neill as he reshapes the squad.

However, Celtic face competition for his signature, with Championship side Millwall and Ligue 1 outfit AJ Auxerre also reportedly monitoring the player.

The interest underlines Celtic’s intent to act quickly in the transfer market as they aim to avoid another period of uncertainty following a season disrupted by managerial changes.

Despite ultimately securing the league title, the campaign was described as chaotic at times, with the club at one point at risk of losing control of their domestic ambitions.

Now, with O’Neill in place and planning underway, Celtic are focused on building a squad capable of competing across multiple fronts, particularly in Europe.

Alongside potential new arrivals, decisions will also need to be made on returning loanees and players entering the final stages of their contracts, with squad planning viewed as a key priority.

Club officials are keen to avoid any repeat of last season’s instability, with early recruitment seen as essential to ensuring a smoother and more competitive campaign ahead.
