Celtic considering unexpected move for Robbie Keane backup option

Celtic are reportedly weighing up a surprise managerial appointment as the club continues its search for a long-term successor, with an unexpected alternative to Robbie Keane now entering the picture.

While there remains a possibility that Martin O’Neill could stay on at Parkhead following an impressive spell as interim manager, discussions have also taken place with former Republic of Ireland striker Robbie Keane. The ex-Ferencvaros boss has been out of work since stepping down from his role last month and is believed to be firmly in the frame.

However, the prospect of appointing Keane has not been universally welcomed. Sections of the Celtic support have voiced concerns over his links to Maccabi Tel Aviv, making his potential arrival a divisive issue among fans.

As a result, Celtic powerbroker Dermot Desmond is thought to be assessing alternative options. Ipswich Town boss Kieran McKenna and Portugal head coach Roberto Martinez have both been mentioned as candidates under consideration.

Now, a new and unexpected name has emerged.

Reports claim Celtic are exploring the possibility of appointing former Liverpool manager Arne Slot following his departure from Anfield at the end of May. The Dutch coach reportedly remains highly regarded despite losing his job after a trophyless second season, having previously guided Liverpool to Premier League glory in his debut campaign.

Slot’s reputation across Europe is still strong, with AC Milan also believed to be interested in the 47-year-old. There is also confidence that he would prove a popular choice among Celtic supporters due to his attacking style and impressive managerial record.

Before his spell in England, Slot enjoyed major success in the Netherlands with Feyenoord, winning the Eredivisie title in 2022-23 before adding domestic cup success the following season.

Former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard recently praised the Dutchman following his dismissal, describing the job he did at Anfield as “incredible” given the challenge of replacing Jurgen Klopp.

Gerrard highlighted the difficulty of stepping into Klopp’s shoes and credited Slot for handling the transition smoothly, particularly after leading Liverpool to a league title in his first year.

Although his time at Anfield ultimately ended in disappointment, Slot’s experience of competing for and winning major honours could make him an appealing candidate for Celtic as the club considers alternatives to Robbie Keane.
