Celtic Fans Send Boardroom Message After Benfica Defeat

Celtic supporters have voiced their frustration with the club’s board following Thursday evening’s 4-1 loss to Benfica, with video footage from Lisbon capturing travelling fans directing their anger towards those running the club.

The clip, shared on X by journalist Conor, showed supporters at the Estádio da Luz singing, “All Celtic fans against the board”, as frustration continued to grow following another disappointing European performance under Martin O’Neill.

The protest came at the end of a difficult night for the Hoops, who have now suffered defeats in both of their opening Europa League league-phase fixtures.

Celtic had already endured a 3-1 home defeat against Ferencvaros before travelling to Portugal. Their latest setback has increased scrutiny of the team and the club’s wider direction, leaving them with work to do if they are to progress in the competition.

O’Neill’s side found themselves facing an uphill battle before the interval, having conceded three times in the opening 45 minutes. Jhon Durán struck twice for Benfica, while Alexander Bah also found the net to leave the visitors with a mountain to climb.

The Celtic manager responded by making changes at half-time, and his team showed signs of improvement after the restart. Haissem Hassan provided the assist for Camilo Durán, who pulled a goal back and offered the visitors a brief glimpse of hope.

However, any possibility of a late comeback was extinguished when Vangelis Pavlidis scored Benfica’s fourth goal, completing a comprehensive victory for the Portuguese side.

Celtic Board Under Growing Pressure

The reaction from the travelling support suggests that the discontent extends beyond the result in Lisbon.

Questions surrounding Celtic’s transfer recruitment, the strength of the squad and the club’s ability to compete consistently in Europe have been raised throughout the season. Another heavy defeat away from home has brought those issues back into the spotlight.

Although the supporters continued backing the team during the match, the chants captured after the final whistle indicated that the board has become a major focus of their frustration.

Celtic must now turn their attention towards domestic matters, with a Premiership meeting against Hearts coming up this weekend. Nevertheless, the latest European disappointment has done little to improve the atmosphere surrounding the club.

O’Neill remained hopeful after the defeat, insisting that Celtic still have an opportunity to qualify for the next stage of the Europa League, with six league-phase matches remaining.

The manager will need his players to respond quickly, but supporters will expect a significant improvement after a first-half performance in Lisbon that left Celtic chasing the game long before they managed to establish any real momentum.
