Casper Widell wants Rangers ‘dream move’ as Danny Röhl eyes summer signing

Casper Widell has emerged as the latest name linked with a summer move to Rangers, with reports suggesting the defender would welcome what has been described as a “dream move” to Ibrox.

Following a disappointing end to the season that saw Rangers finish third in the Scottish Premiership, manager Danny Röhl is believed to be targeting defensive reinforcements as he looks to reshape his squad ahead of the new campaign.

A report from Swedish journalist Anel Avdić claims Widell is firmly on Rangers’ radar, with the 23-year-old centre-back viewed as a player capable of strengthening the backline.

Widell enjoyed a solid season with Excelsior Rotterdam, making 34 league appearances as the Dutch side secured a 13th-place finish in the Eredivisie. His consistency and experience at a relatively young age are said to make him an attractive option for Rangers as they seek more depth in defence.

However, the Glasgow side may not have a free run at the Swedish defender. The report suggests Championship clubs Derby County and Blackburn Rovers are also monitoring his situation, potentially setting up a summer battle for his signature.

Widell, whose contract runs until 2027, came through the academy at Helsingborgs IF before establishing himself in the first team and later moving to the Netherlands in 2023. Since joining Excelsior, he has amassed over 100 appearances, underlining both his reliability and experience.

The defender has also represented Sweden at multiple youth levels, progressing through the Under-17, Under-19 and Under-21 setups.

While Rangers are reportedly prioritising Scottish talent this summer to strengthen their homegrown core, interest in Widell suggests the club are still prepared to look abroad for players they believe can improve the squad.

If Rangers can beat off English competition, Widell could prove to be a smart and relatively affordable addition as Röhl looks to rebuild a side capable of challenging again next season.
