Breaking news: Ex-Boro coach heading for unexpected Championship departure after years-long link
Former Middlesbrough coach Alan Knill is reportedly heading for a surprise departure from Sheffield United this summer, bringing an end to his long-standing working relationship with Chris Wilder.
Knill has been one of Wilder’s most trusted allies throughout his managerial career, with the pair sharing a connection stretching back well over a decade. Their coaching partnership formally began at Northampton Town in January 2014, although the duo had already worked closely together during a spell at Bury between 2008 and 2011, where Wilder previously served under Knill.

Since then, the pair have become almost inseparable in football management, working side by side during Wilder’s various managerial appointments — including spells at Middlesbrough and Sheffield United.
However, despite expectations that Wilder will remain in charge at Bramall Lane, reports now suggest Knill is set to leave the club in an unexpected summer shake-up.
According to claims first reported by the Sheffield Star, the decision has been driven by Sheffield United’s ownership group as part of a longer-term restructuring strategy focused on the club’s future direction.
The development is understood to have come as a surprise to Knill himself, with uncertainty still surrounding whether Wilder had any involvement in the decision or how he feels about the departure of one of his closest football confidants.
The potential exit would mark the end of one of the Championship’s longest-running coaching partnerships and could represent a significant shift behind the scenes at Bramall Lane.
Knill has long been viewed as a key figure in Wilder’s backroom team, playing an important role in the successes enjoyed throughout their time together.
Only recently, Wilder publicly praised the 61-year-old while Knill received a lifetime achievement award at the Sheffield Star Football Awards, highlighting the impact his assistant has made over the years.
Speaking at the event, Wilder described Knill as an “incredible partner” who had been central to their football journey.
The Sheffield United manager also stressed that he never viewed Knill as simply an assistant coach, instead describing their relationship as a genuine partnership built on trust, loyalty and shared football expertise.
Wilder explained that he had known Knill since his teenage years as an apprentice at Southampton and credited him as a major influence throughout his managerial career, adding that the veteran coach rarely receives the recognition he deserves.
Meanwhile, speculation is already growing over possible changes to Wilder’s coaching staff.
Blades legend Billy Sharp has been linked with a return to Bramall Lane in a coaching role after leaving Doncaster Rovers, potentially opening the door for a fresh face behind the scenes.
For now, however, attention remains firmly on Knill’s uncertain future and what could prove to be the end of a highly respected football partnership spanning more than a decade.
