Bolton Wanderers 2–1 Preston North End: Bolton Begin Championship Return With Victory

Bolton Wanderers marked their return to the Championship with a hard-earned 2–1 victory over Preston North End at the Toughsheet Community Stadium on Saturday, August 15, 2026.

A crowd of 26,262 watched the newly promoted side make an impressive start to life back in the second tier, with Bolton scoring twice during an excellent opening 25 minutes before Preston mounted a late fightback. The result also represented Bolton’s first Championship victory since March 2019.

The hosts wasted little time making their presence felt and took the lead after just 14 minutes.

⚽ 14′ — Sam Dalby puts Bolton ahead

Sam Dalby gave Bolton the breakthrough after Daniel Iversen could not hold onto a John McAtee effort.

The Preston goalkeeper produced a poor save, leaving the ball in a dangerous position. Dalby reacted quickest, calmly directing the rebound into the net from around 18 yards to give Bolton a 1–0 advantage.

It was an ideal start for Dalby, who had enjoyed an impressive campaign last season, scoring 14 goals across all competitions.

⚽ 25′ — Thierry Gale doubles the lead

Bolton continued to apply pressure and added a second goal just 11 minutes later.

McAtee was again central to the move, finding Thierry Gale on the left side. Gale drove inside before unleashing a curling right-footed finish that beat Iversen and found the back of the net.

The goal gave Bolton a commanding 2–0 advantage and reflected their superiority during the opening stages.

The hosts almost extended their lead again in the 37th minute when Dalby headed into the net. However, the effort was disallowed after McAtee was deemed to have committed a foul during the build-up.

Preston respond after the break

Preston needed a major improvement and made several changes shortly after the hour mark, bringing on Leo Leroy, Odel Offiah and Jusef Erabi in an attempt to turn the match around.

Bolton continued to threaten, though, and had an excellent chance to put the result beyond doubt in the 73rd minute.

Dalby found himself through on goal with only Iversen to beat, but his left-footed attempt lacked power and was comfortably saved by the Preston goalkeeper.

Four minutes later, Preston came close to creating another opportunity. Milutin Osmajic escaped the offside trap and had a chance to attack the Bolton defence. Instead of shooting, he attempted to square the ball towards Erabi, but the home defence recovered in time to prevent the danger.

⚽ 86′ — Erabi gives Preston hope

Preston eventually found a way back into the contest with just four minutes of normal time remaining.

Substitute Jusef Erabi reduced the deficit to 2–1 by heading home a cross from fellow substitute Andrija Vukcevic.

The late goal gave Preston belief that they could rescue a point, and Bolton were forced to defend their advantage during the closing stages.

The visitors came close to an equaliser when Liam Lindsay found himself with a late headed opportunity from close range, but he could not direct the attempt on target.

Bolton ultimately held firm to claim all three points.

Bolton’s victory was built on an outstanding first-half display. They raced into a 2–0 lead within 25 minutes and controlled much of the game before Preston improved after the interval.

Although Erabi’s late header ensured a tense finish, Bolton had created enough opportunities to justify their victory.

The result is particularly significant given Bolton’s return to the Championship after securing promotion from League One last season. Their previous victory in the second tier had come back in 2019.
