Ally McCoist outlines Rangers’ next transfer priority after Dundee United draw

Ally McCoist believes Rangers must strengthen their attacking options after being left underwhelmed by their opening-day display against Dundee United.

The Light Blues began their Scottish Premiership campaign with a 1-1 draw at Tannadice, falling behind when Lachlan Rose scored before Thelo Aasgaard produced a superb strike to rescue a point.

Despite the comeback, McCoist felt Rangers lacked creativity throughout the contest and insisted the squad still requires reinforcements.

He pointed to a shortage of attacking invention and suggested the club should prioritise adding quality in the wide areas before the transfer window closes.

McCoist said: “I thought from a Rangers point of view that there was a distinct lack of creativity. Aasgaard scored a brilliant goal with his left foot, it was a terrific finish, but I thought there was a lack of creativity in the side.

“They looked as though they needed strengthening, particularly in wide areas.”

His concerns were quickly addressed, with Rangers announcing the signing of winger Daisuke Yokota from Hannover 96 shortly after the match. The Japanese wide man arrives on a three-year contract after contributing nine goals and assists last season, adding fresh attacking quality to Derek McInnes’ squad.

Rangers may not be finished in the market either, with Frosinone winger Fares Ghedjemis continuing to be linked with a move to Ibrox following his impressive campaign in Italy, where he recorded 18 goal contributions.

The arrival of Yokota, coupled with ongoing links to Ghedjemis, suggests Rangers are actively looking to solve the attacking issues McCoist highlighted after the opening-day draw.
