Sam Allardyce’s Rangers verdict sparks fresh warning for Leicester City boss Russell Martin
Russell Martin faces Leicester City sack warning as Sam Allardyce makes Rangers comparison
Sam Allardyce has warned Russell Martin that his refusal to change his footballing philosophy could cost him his job at Leicester City, drawing comparisons with the manager’s troubled spells at Southampton and Rangers.

Martin has become one of the most divisive managers in English football because of his commitment to possession-based football. He has stuck to his principles throughout spells at MK Dons, Swansea City, Southampton, Rangers and now Leicester, even when results have failed to meet expectations.
His approach initially brought success. Martin impressed at MK Dons and Swansea before guiding Southampton back to the Premier League through the Championship play-offs. However, the Saints struggled to adapt to his style in the top flight, and he was dismissed only months after securing promotion.
His subsequent move to Rangers proved even more difficult. The former Scotland international won just five of his 17 matches in charge before leaving Ibrox, recording a particularly disappointing spell that drew widespread criticism from supporters.
Martin then took charge of Leicester City, who are competing in League One for only the second time in their history. Although the Foxes have shown signs of improvement recently, their performances have remained inconsistent, leaving the manager under pressure from sections of the fanbase.
Sam Allardyce explains why Russell Martin could lose Leicester City job
Allardyce believes Martin’s determination to stick to his preferred style, regardless of the players available to him, could ultimately lead to another dismissal.
Speaking on the No Tippy Tappy Football podcast alongside presenter Natalie Pike and former Salford City manager Karl Robinson, the former England boss was asked whether he would offer Martin advice on adopting a more pragmatic approach.
Allardyce made it clear that he did not believe such advice would be accepted.
“No, because he wouldn’t take it. Simple as that,” he said.
“He’s refused to take it, and it cost him his jobs at Southampton and Rangers.
“It’s going to cost him his job at Leicester, because his beliefs are far beyond the capabilities of the players he’s working with and they probably don’t like it.
“They can’t like it because they’re not winning.”
The former Bolton Wanderers and West Ham United manager also highlighted Martin’s determination to continue playing his preferred brand of football regardless of outside criticism.
Allardyce suggested that Martin’s unwavering commitment to his philosophy could become a problem if he refuses to adapt to the demands of his current squad.
Southampton success continues to shape Martin’s philosophy
Allardyce believes Martin’s promotion with Southampton may have strengthened his conviction that his methods are the right way to approach the game.
The 40-year-old achieved his objective of returning the Saints to the Premier League by sticking to his possession-based principles, giving him a strong reason to continue trusting the same approach.
However, the difficulties that followed in the top flight, along with his disappointing Rangers tenure, have raised questions about whether that philosophy can deliver consistent results across different teams and competitive environments.
Leicester’s recent improvement offers Martin some encouragement, but Allardyce believes the manager must recognise the limitations of his squad if he wants to avoid another early departure.
For now, Martin remains committed to his methods. Whether that conviction becomes the foundation of a successful Leicester rebuild or another source of frustration will depend on how results develop in the weeks ahead.
