Celtic face fresh injury concern over Liam Scales after Benfica defeat
Celtic have been left with a potential injury concern surrounding Liam Scales following their disappointing 4-1 defeat to Benfica in the Europa League.
The result means the Hoops have suffered defeats in their opening two matches of the European campaign, adding to the pressure on Martin O’Neill as he looks to get his side back on track.

However, Celtic have little time to dwell on their latest setback, with a crucial Scottish Premiership meeting against Hearts coming up this weekend.
With Rangers beginning to find their rhythm, Celtic will be keen to maintain their domestic form and avoid losing further ground in the title race. Having their strongest possible squad available will be important, but questions have emerged over Scales’ fitness after his surprise omission from the starting XI in Portugal.
Is Liam Scales carrying an injury?
One of the biggest talking points before the Benfica match was O’Neill’s decision to leave Scales on the bench, opting instead for Dane Murray and Auston Trusty in central defence.
The selection raised eyebrows, particularly given Murray’s limited experience at this level and the criticism he has received for some of his performances this season.
Celtic subsequently conceded four goals, with their defensive display leaving plenty of room for improvement.
Scales remained an unused substitute throughout the match, prompting speculation that the Republic of Ireland international might have been dealing with a fitness issue.
Speaking on Premier Sports Ireland, former Celtic defender Charlie Mulgrew suggested that an injury could explain the defender’s absence from the starting lineup.
As reported by CeltsAreHere, Mulgrew said: “Scales, you can only assume he’s got a knock and is being rested. Because I think you see how big a player he is for Celtic. It’s not always appreciated but he is somebody who heads the ball in the box and defends well.”
However, there has been no confirmed update establishing that Scales is injured. His omission therefore remains a talking point rather than proof that he is carrying a knock.
Celtic could benefit from Scales’ experience against Hearts
Celtic struggled to contain Benfica at times, with the Portuguese side finding opportunities to exploit weaknesses in the visitors’ defensive structure.
Although it would be unfair to attribute the defeat solely to the absence of one player, Scales’ defensive experience and aerial ability could prove valuable as O’Neill considers his options for the weekend.
The 27-year-old has developed into an important member of the Celtic squad, offering composure, physicality and familiarity with the demands of playing for the club.
His potential availability against Hearts could therefore become an important consideration, particularly with Celtic looking to respond quickly to their European disappointment.
For now, supporters will be waiting for further information about his condition and whether he will return to the starting lineup.
Pressure increases on Martin O’Neill
The Benfica defeat has added to a difficult period for Celtic, who have lost four of their last five matches across all competitions, according to the report.
With domestic and European fixtures arriving in quick succession, O’Neill faces the challenge of restoring confidence while finding greater consistency in his team’s performances.
The upcoming clash with Hearts offers Celtic an immediate opportunity to respond, but the manager must also make important decisions about his defensive personnel.
Whether Scales was rested, carrying a minor knock or left out for tactical reasons remains unclear. His status ahead of the weekend will be one of the key details to watch as Celtic attempt to get their season back on course.
