Rangers Boss Derek McInnes Faces Dujon Sterling Call Ahead of Dundee Match
Rangers Receive Dujon Sterling Injury Boost Ahead of Dundee Clash
Rangers appear to have received encouraging news ahead of their Scottish Premiership meeting with Dundee, with Dujon Sterling spotted back in training at Auchenhowie.
Derek McInnes’ side travel to Dens Park on Saturday evening knowing that a victory could see them move back above Celtic at the top of the table.
The Rangers manager has had to contend with several injury problems this season, particularly in attack, where Youssef Chermiti and Lawrence Shankland have both been unavailable. Cammy Devlin is another player who remains sidelined.
However, Sterling’s latest situation appears more encouraging after concerns emerged over his fitness following last weekend’s match against Kilmarnock.
The versatile defender managed only 45 minutes in that fixture, raising questions about whether he would be available for the trip to Dundee. An update from Rangers’ training ground on Friday has now provided a more positive indication.
Dujon Sterling latest as Rangers prepare for Dundee
Sterling has already featured for more minutes in the Premiership this season than he managed across the entirety of the previous campaign, underlining his growing importance to McInnes’ team.
Former Rangers defender Alan Hutton has also praised the 26-year-old, describing him as “brilliant” after highlighting the contribution he makes to the side.
Speaking while Rangers’ players trained at Auchenhowie on Friday morning, Sky Sports reporter Luke Shanley provided an encouraging update on Sterling’s condition.
“There was a bit of concern at the weekend,” Shanley explained.
“But he’s out there training. That’s a positive for Rangers. They’ve had to manage him in terms of his injuries.
“Not having European football, that burden is not on him to play all the time. He’s looking to make his 100th Rangers appearance this weekend.”
Sterling’s involvement in training will therefore come as a welcome boost for McInnes as he prepares his team for another important league fixture.
His availability would give Rangers additional options at the back, although managing his workload will remain important given his previous fitness concerns.
With no further injury problems mentioned in the update, the Ibrox side appear to be in a relatively positive position heading into the weekend.
How could Rangers line up against Dundee?
Sterling’s return to training could put him in contention to feature against Dundee, potentially leaving James Penrice to begin the match among the substitutes.
McInnes could also consider making an adjustment in the attacking areas, with Findlay Curtis potentially pushing for a starting place.
Minsu Kim could be given an opportunity to rest if the Rangers manager decides to freshen things up, although any changes will depend on his assessment of the squad ahead of kick-off.
Beyond those potential alterations, Rangers could retain much of the team that has helped them build momentum in recent weeks.
With the next international break approaching, McInnes will be keen to maintain that progress and ensure his side remain firmly in the title race.
Sterling’s return to training is an encouraging development, but his final involvement against Dundee will depend on the manager’s selection and fitness assessment before the match.
