Aston Villa maintain Nicolas Raskin interest as Rangers star emerges as summer transfer option

Aston Villa are continuing to monitor Rangers midfielder Nicolas Raskin ahead of a potential move for the Belgian next summer.

The 25-year-old has reportedly emerged as a strong candidate for a switch to one of Europe’s top-five leagues, with the Premier League increasingly viewed as his most likely destination.

According to TEAMtalk, Belgian sources were surprised that Rangers did not receive a serious offer from a Premier League club during the previous transfer window. Hull City were said to have tested the waters with a £12million proposal, although the bid was considered derisory.

That situation could change next summer, with Aston Villa among the clubs maintaining an interest in Raskin.

The midfielder has been an important figure at Ibrox since arriving from Standard Liege in January 2023. Over the past three-and-a-half years, he has developed into one of Rangers’ most dependable performers and established himself as a regular in the heart of the midfield.

Raskin has already made more than 150 appearances for the Scottish giants, contributing 13 goals and 23 assists in that time.

His importance to the current Rangers side has remained clear this season. He has featured heavily under Derek McInnes and has accumulated 706 minutes across nine appearances in the 2026/27 campaign.

That consistency has inevitably attracted attention from clubs south of the border.

Why Aston Villa are interested in Raskin

Villa’s interest in Raskin is not new.

The Belgian has reportedly been on their radar for more than a year, and their continued pursuit could become increasingly relevant as Unai Emery looks to reshape his midfield options.

The Villans have already seen significant changes in that area, while injuries and the age profile of some of their senior midfielders could force further recruitment.

Raskin would offer a different profile, combining his ability to contribute defensively with an eye for progressing the ball and making an impact further forward.

His performances for Rangers have shown that he can operate effectively as a box-to-box midfielder, while his experience at Ibrox has given him plenty of exposure to pressure and expectation.

There had been suggestions as recently as last week that Raskin was not actively seeking an exit from Rangers despite interest from Aston Villa and Tottenham.

The latest update, however, has altered the picture somewhat.

With a Premier League move now being described as the most likely outcome for next summer, Villa could find themselves in a strong position if they decide to turn their long-standing interest into a formal approach.

For Rangers, that could mean another major decision over one of their key midfielders.

Raskin remains under contract at Ibrox and has continued to play an important role for McInnes, but growing interest from the Premier League could make his future one of the major transfer stories surrounding the club next summer.
