3 managers Southampton should consider if Tonda Eckert’s Spygate ban is confirmed

Southampton are still waiting to learn the outcome of the Football Association’s investigation into Tonda Eckert following the Spygate controversy that overshadowed the end of the 2025-26 campaign.

Eckert was charged earlier this year over his alleged involvement in the incident, which ultimately resulted in Southampton being removed from last season’s Championship play-offs. The Saints had reached the play-off final after overcoming Middlesbrough across two legs.

The 33-year-old could now face a significant suspension if the FA decides against him, leaving Southampton with a major decision to make in the dugout.

The club have continued to back Eckert so far, despite Southampton also beginning the current Championship campaign with a four-point deduction connected to the wider fallout from the saga.

Should Eckert receive a lengthy football ban, Southampton would likely need to find a temporary replacement while he serves his suspension. Several experienced managers currently without clubs could potentially enter the conversation.

Robbie Keane

Robbie Keane is currently available after leaving Hungarian club Ferencvaros at the end of last season.

The former Republic of Ireland international enjoyed success during his time in Hungary, winning the league title in 2025 and the Hungarian Cup in 2026.

A move back into English football could therefore appeal to Keane if Southampton are forced to make a managerial change.

Sean Dyche

Sean Dyche would offer Southampton plenty of experience, particularly when it comes to working in the Championship.

The 55-year-old has managed in the Premier League with Burnley, Everton and Nottingham Forest, while his record with Burnley included two promotions to the top flight.

Dyche is currently without a club and could provide Southampton with an experienced option if Eckert is suspended. His approach, however, would represent a noticeable tactical change from the style Southampton have been using under Eckert.

Scott Parker

Scott Parker is another name who could attract attention if Southampton need a new manager.

Parker has already demonstrated his ability to win promotion, having taken Bournemouth, Fulham and Burnley into the Premier League during his managerial career.

He is also currently available after leaving Burnley towards the end of the 2025-26 season.

Parker’s possession-focused approach could make him an interesting candidate for Southampton, particularly given the profile of the squad already at St Mary’s.

If the FA ultimately imposes a suspension on Eckert, Southampton may have to move quickly to find a short-term solution, with Keane, Dyche and Parker among the experienced managers who could potentially be considered.
