Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson ready to question his own role as pressure intensifies

Phil Parkinson has admitted he must examine his own performance after Wrexham suffered a humiliating 6-0 defeat to West Ham United at the London Stadium.

The heavy loss represented one of the darkest evenings of Parkinson’s tenure, with pressure now increasing on the Wrexham manager following an inconsistent start to the campaign and another summer in which the club invested more than £30 million in new players.

Wrexham were completely overwhelmed by a dominant West Ham side, who moved back to the top of the Championship with a commanding six-goal victory.

Parkinson accepted that responsibility had to be shared throughout the club, including by himself, after admitting his side failed to demonstrate the resilience and character that have previously defined them.

“I’ve got to analyse myself and have that accountability, which I always do,” Parkinson said.

“I’ll be looking at myself and what I should have done better.”

The manager insisted that both the players and coaching staff must take responsibility and react quickly, with Wrexham needing to rediscover the qualities that have helped them achieve so much in recent years.

Parkinson admitted that the performance was particularly concerning because Wrexham appeared to lack their usual toughness when the match became difficult.

Wrexham punished by ruthless West Ham

Jarrod Bowen put the hosts ahead with his sixth goal of the campaign before Joel Piroe extended West Ham’s advantage.

The Hammers then ran away with the contest after goals from Konstantinos Mavropanos, Taty Castellanos, Mohamadou Kante and Manor Solomon completed a brutal 6-0 scoreline.

Although Parkinson acknowledged that West Ham possess considerable attacking quality, he was unhappy with how Wrexham defended, particularly during the opening half.

“We came up against an exceptional front-line tonight,” he said.

“But equally in that first half those two goals – those two moments – we could have dealt with so much better.”

Parkinson stressed that Wrexham needed to show considerably more determination in key defensive situations if they were going to compete with a confident side of West Ham’s quality.

The manager felt there had been little separating the teams during the opening 25 minutes, with Wrexham creating promising positions before basic defensive mistakes changed the direction of the match.

“Unfortunately the very basics of defending came up short and if you know where you need to be in those moments teams like West Ham are going to punish you,” he added.

Parkinson demands a response

The scale of the defeat was made even more difficult for Parkinson to accept because Wrexham have previously risen to the occasion against strong opposition.

He referenced performances against Chelsea, Nottingham Forest, Coventry during their National League days and Sheffield United as examples of matches in which his team had competed with greater belief and determination.

That made Saturday night’s collapse particularly disappointing.

Parkinson now knows Wrexham must respond quickly, with the manager calling for a return to the character and resilience that have been central to the club’s rise.

“We’ve got to find a way back and give ourselves a chance,” he said.

“We need to show more character and resilience.”
