Rangers fend off Watford competition to secure defensive signing

Rangers have enjoyed a productive transfer window so far under Derek McInnes, securing several notable additions as they continue to reshape their squad.

Although there are still concerns about the overall balance of the team, chairman Andrew Cavenagh has demonstrated a willingness to invest heavily in the squad. The Ibrox club have already completed 11 signings this summer, with further business expected before the transfer deadline.

One particularly positive development for Rangers is their ability to compete with clubs from England for transfer targets. Their success in beating Watford to Ben Godfrey’s signature highlights the growing appeal of the Scottish giants, particularly with European football potentially on offer.

English clubs generally possess greater financial resources, but Rangers have shown that they can still win transfer battles against Championship opposition when the right opportunity arises.

Rangers brought in former Everton defender Ben Godfrey on loan from Atalanta earlier this summer, with the agreement also containing an option for the Scottish club to make his move permanent at the end of the campaign.

According to Sky Sports, Rangers had to overcome competition from Watford to secure the 28-year-old centre-back.

Godfrey’s decision to join Rangers has now forced Watford to explore alternative options as they look to strengthen their defence before the transfer window shuts.

The Championship club are reportedly reviewing several possibilities and are targeting at least two centre-backs before the deadline.

Rangers still have areas to address

Rangers appear close to adding another player, with Girona winger Kim Min-su reportedly heading towards Ibrox. If completed, the South Korean attacker would become the club’s 12th signing of the summer.

Despite the volume of arrivals, however, McInnes and the Rangers recruitment team still have important gaps to fill.

The manager could benefit from another natural option on the right wing ahead of the 2026/27 season. Adding a striker would also make sense, particularly with the need to provide adequate cover and eventually replace Youssef Chermiti.

Midfield remains another area that could require attention. Much will depend on potential departures, but Rangers currently appear short of creativity in the centre of the pitch.

Defensively, another centre-back should also be considered if Rangers want sufficient depth and quality to compete domestically and in Europe.

With the transfer deadline approaching, the Ibrox hierarchy still has an opportunity to complete the squad and give McInnes the resources required for a demanding campaign.
