Rangers defensive plans take shape as Dujon Sterling transfer truth revealed
Rangers defender Dujon Sterling has been at the centre of transfer speculation as the summer window approaches its conclusion.
The 26-year-old right-back has been linked with a move away from Ibrox after spending the past three years with the club. Sterling’s current contract is due to expire at the end of the season.
There had been suggestions that Bristol City could make a move for the former Chelsea player, particularly after Rangers brought in Kosta Nedeljkovic from Aston Villa. However, those reports have now been played down, with Rangers Review journalist Joshua Barrie dismissing claims that Bristol are targeting Sterling.
Sterling’s future had looked uncertain earlier in the summer as Rangers searched for another right-back, but manager Derek McInnes appears to have confidence in him.
The Light Blues are still looking for a long-term replacement for James Tavernier, leaving Sterling, Nedeljkovic and Ross McCrorie competing for opportunities on the right side of defence.
Despite Sterling’s history of injury problems, the latest indications suggest he is likely to remain at Rangers for the time being.
That could create further uncertainty for McCrorie, who joined Rangers from Bristol City and will be keen to establish himself at Ibrox after progressing through the club’s academy.
However, his early performances under McInnes have failed to make a major impression, and he may have to work his way up the pecking order.
At present, Nedeljkovic and Sterling appear to be ahead of McCrorie in the battle for the right-back position, although the situation could change as the season progresses.
