Rangers suffer another setback as Hibs snatch dramatic late victory

Callum Wright’s stoppage-time winner condemned Rangers to another frustrating defeat and left Derek McInnes still searching for his first competitive victory as manager.

Three games into another supposed new era at Ibrox, concerns are already beginning to surface over whether Rangers have enough to challenge Celtic this season.

McInnes’ appointment was greeted with plenty of optimism given his previous connection with the club, but the early signs have been far from encouraging. Unless Rangers can strengthen their attack before the transfer window closes, the gap to a rejuvenated Celtic side could become increasingly difficult to bridge.

While Celtic produced an impressive display at Rugby Park, Rangers once again looked short of answers as they struggled to find their best combination.

David Gray’s Hibernian arrived in Glasgow also looking for a response after an inconsistent start to the campaign. Instead, they produced the perfect result, surviving a Rangers fightback before Wright’s late strike secured all three points.

The contest was overshadowed early on by a controversial penalty decision.

Rangers players and supporters were left puzzled when referee Don Robertson was sent to the pitchside monitor after an incident involving new signing Vanja Dragojevic and Jason Kerr during a Hibernian corner.

Dragojevic, making his first start and operating in an unfamiliar right-back position, appeared surprised by the decision. Robertson ultimately awarded Hibs a penalty, with Josh Campbell making no mistake from the spot to give the visitors an early lead.

Rangers had plenty of time to recover, but their struggles in the final third continued to frustrate. Chances came and went without the hosts showing enough composure to turn their pressure into goals.

Hibernian, meanwhile, refused to sit back and nearly doubled their advantage when Lawrence Shankland struck the crossbar.

Rangers eventually found an equaliser with just four minutes remaining. Felix Passlack’s misplaced pass was intercepted by Thelo Aasgaard, who delivered the ball into the box before Djeidi Gassama’s cross was turned into his own net by Miguel Chaiwa.

The momentum appeared to have shifted in Rangers’ favour, but Hibs had the final say.

With the match deep into stoppage time, Callum Wright found the decisive finish to send the visitors home with a dramatic victory and leave McInnes facing even more questions about his Rangers rebuild.
