Why Kris Boyd wants Rangers youngster Findlay Curtis to leave on loan

Kris Boyd believes another loan spell would be the best move for Rangers youngster Findlay Curtis, insisting regular first-team football is essential for the winger’s development.

Curtis, 20, impressed during a season-long loan at Kilmarnock last term, scoring six goals and providing one assist to earn a Scotland call-up. Supporters had hoped he would now establish himself in Derek McInnes’ senior squad, but Rangers’ summer recruitment could leave him with limited opportunities.

The Light Blues are closing in on PSV winger Couhaib Driouech after already signing Daisuke Yokota, adding further competition in the wide areas. That could push the academy graduate further down the pecking order, something Boyd believes would hinder his long-term progress.

Speaking on the Warm Up podcast, Boyd dismissed the suggestion that Curtis should solve Rangers’ issues out wide.

“No, I think Findlay Curtis is a terrific young talent. I would hate to see him wasted,” Boyd said.

“He went to Kilmarnock last season and got regular football, found himself in the Scotland squad, rightly so because of his performances. But now it’s going to be back to maybe five to ten minutes here and there.

“It’s something that stunts the growth of our youngsters. For Scottish football we need to find a way to get them more game time. For me, looking at it right now, he has to go back on loan.”

A return to Rugby Park would appear to be a logical option should Rangers sanction another temporary exit. Curtis thrived under Kilmarnock’s system last season and would likely attract interest from several Scottish Premiership clubs if made available.

The winger has also made his ambitions clear, admitting previously: “You can’t really sit on the bench at this age.”

While Curtis will be determined to fight for a place under McInnes, another loan move could prove the ideal solution if first-team opportunities at Ibrox remain limited. Regular minutes would continue his development and potentially leave Rangers with a more polished player upon his return.
