Hugh Keevins outlines the major challenge facing Derek McInnes at Rangers F.C.
Derek McInnes begins his new chapter at Rangers F.C. fully aware of the challenge ahead, with expectations high and recent history offering little comfort.
While several managers have passed through Ibrox in recent years, only Steven Gerrard managed to deliver major league success, and even that came in a single standout campaign. Since the days of Walter Smith, Rangers have struggled to maintain consistent dominance.

Journalist Hugh Keevins believes McInnes is walking into a club that has fallen short of its standards for far too long. He pointed to Rangers’ limited trophy haul over the past 15 years as proof of the scale of the rebuild.
Despite the tough reality, McInnes may offer something different. As a former Rangers player and lifelong supporter, he understands the club’s culture and what success means at Ibrox.
Under the ownership of Andrew Cavenagh and the 49ers group, there is also a clear focus on rebuilding with more Scottish talent and stronger identity within the squad.
The arrival of Lawrence Shankland from Heart of Midlothian F.C. could be a key part of that strategy, with McInnes expected to lean on players he knows well.
After a disappointing campaign and several signings that failed to deliver, Rangers now appear ready to return to a simpler approach as they aim to restore consistency and compete for trophies once again.
