Fresh Reo Hatate transfer speculation emerges from Japan
Reo Hatate linked with Japan return as Celtic future remains unclear
Reo Hatate has once again found himself at the centre of transfer speculation, with reports in Japan suggesting a potential return to his homeland could be on the cards.
The Celtic midfielder has been the subject of increasing uncertainty this summer as Martin O’Neill assesses his squad ahead of the new campaign. According to claims circulating on Japanese social media, J1 League champions Kashima Antlers are monitoring Hatate’s situation and could consider a move if the opportunity arises.
The speculation, shared by Balón de Japón on X, points to the possibility of Hatate reuniting with Toru Oniki, the manager who previously worked with him at Kawasaki Frontale before his move to Scotland.

At this stage, there is no indication that any formal approach has been made, and the reports remain speculative rather than concrete. Hatate has been linked with moves away from Celtic on several occasions in the past, with many rumours failing to progress beyond the initial stages.
The Japan international has enjoyed a successful spell at Parkhead since arriving in January 2022, quickly establishing himself as one of the club’s most influential midfielders. His vision, creativity and technical ability played a major role in Celtic’s domestic success during his strongest seasons.
However, injuries and inconsistent form have disrupted his progress in recent years, leading to fresh questions about his long-term future in Glasgow.
A move to Kashima would offer Hatate the chance to return to familiar surroundings and work once again under a coach who knows his game well. Whether that prospect appeals to the 28-year-old remains unclear, particularly as he may still feel he has unfinished business in European football.
From Celtic’s perspective, any potential departure would likely require a significant transfer fee. Hatate remains one of the club’s most valuable midfield assets, and replacing a player of his quality would be no simple task, especially with Champions League football on the horizon.
For now, the links to Kashima Antlers should be viewed as speculation rather than a developing transfer. Nevertheless, the connection with Oniki and the uncertainty surrounding Hatate’s future ensure the rumours will continue to attract attention as the summer window unfolds.
