Wolves’ decision to sack Rob Edwards explained as new details emerge

Wolves supporters have been left stunned after reports emerged detailing the surprising circumstances surrounding Rob Edwards’ dismissal.

Despite enduring a disastrous Premier League campaign that ended with relegation, Wolves had appeared to be building serious momentum for life in the Championship. High-profile arrivals such as Kieran Trippier and Raul Jimenez had boosted optimism around Molineux, with Edwards believed to have played a key role in shaping the club’s transfer activity ahead of next season.

The former manager had seemingly been central to Wolves’ rebuild and was widely expected to lead the charge for an immediate return to the top flight. However, events took an unexpected turn when reports surfaced linking Gil Vicente boss César Peixoto with the managerial vacancy.

The speculation initially caught many off guard, especially given Wolves’ transfer planning under Edwards. Soon after, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reported that Wolves had reached an agreement in principle with Peixoto, with a verbal deal already in place.

Shortly afterwards, it was confirmed that Edwards had been dismissed — but the manner in which he reportedly discovered the news has sparked widespread reaction.

According to reporter Peter O’Rourke, Edwards first became aware of doubts over his future when a family member noticed rumours of Peixoto’s impending appointment circulating on social media. Concerned by the reports, the 43-year-old is said to have contacted Wolves directly to seek clarification.

During a phone call with club officials, Edwards was reportedly informed that he had indeed been sacked. The development came as a major shock, particularly as he had recently helped oversee the club’s early summer business, including the arrivals of Trippier and Jimenez, while also playing a role in securing a new contract for Andre.

The unusual sequence of events has raised eyebrows, especially as reports of Peixoto’s arrival emerged before Edwards’ departure had been publicly confirmed.

Wolves’ new manager, César Peixoto, arrives with a growing reputation in Portuguese football. The 46-year-old earned praise for guiding Gil Vicente to an impressive sixth-place finish in Liga Portugal despite operating with limited resources.

Peixoto is viewed as a progressive coach who favours a 4-2-3-1 formation, placing emphasis on defensive organisation, quick attacking transitions and youth development — qualities Wolves hope can inspire a swift return to the Premier League.
