Martin O’Neill voices worry over Celtic’s Champions League prospects
Martin O’Neill has admitted he has concerns over the timing of Celtic’s crucial Champions League qualifier later this summer, as he prepares for one of the biggest early challenges of his return to the club.
The newly appointed Celtic manager is already focusing on the Hoops’ two-legged qualifying tie scheduled for late August. While the quality of the opposition remains a factor, O’Neill believes the timing of the fixtures could prove equally problematic.

Speaking to Track Radio, the Irishman explained that Celtic may be at a disadvantage compared to potential opponents, who could arrive with greater match sharpness depending on their own pre-season preparations and fixture schedules.
O’Neill reflected on similar experiences from his first spell in charge, admitting he often found sides that looked beatable later in the campaign became far tougher opponents during the early weeks of the season because of their fitness and rhythm.
He acknowledged the challenge ahead, pointing to Celtic’s disappointment in Europe last season when the club failed to progress despite being expected to overcome their opponents. While concerned, O’Neill stressed there is also excitement surrounding the opportunity to secure Champions League football.
The warning will not be lost on Celtic supporters, who understand the importance of navigating the qualifiers successfully. A poor European campaign can impact finances, recruitment and momentum before the domestic season has fully taken shape.
As a result, the coming weeks are likely to be crucial for Celtic’s transfer business. O’Neill will want new signings through the door early, with key areas such as attack, wide positions, goalkeeping and midfield requiring clarity before qualification begins.
The experienced manager knows the risks involved, but he also understands the reward. Celtic’s entire season could be shaped by what happens across two decisive nights in August, with European qualifiers often proving far more difficult than expected.
