Alan Pardew responds to surprising Tonda Eckert moment amid Southampton fallout
Although the Championship play-offs finished weeks ago, the fallout from Southampton’s Spygate controversy continues to dominate headlines, with fresh reactions still emerging from across football.
Many had expected head coach Tonda Eckert to depart St Mary’s Stadium following his involvement in the scandal. However, recent developments suggest the German manager could remain in place after receiving strong backing from Southampton chairman Dragan Solak.

Solak publicly defended Eckert in a recent interview, arguing that people deserve second chances while also praising the manager’s coaching qualities and the progress made on the pitch under his leadership.
The chairman’s comments have triggered divided opinions among supporters and observers. While some Southampton fans have welcomed the support shown toward Eckert, others — particularly Middlesbrough supporters — have criticised the club’s handling of the situation.
Former Southampton boss Alan Pardew has now added his voice to the debate, admitting he was unconvinced by Solak’s public defence of the manager.
Pardew, who managed the Saints between 2009 and 2010, suggested the interview felt more like a public relations effort aimed at preserving Eckert’s position rather than addressing lingering concerns surrounding the scandal.
Speaking on talkSPORT, Pardew said it appeared Southampton were trying to steady the situation and keep their manager in place, though he questioned whether the message had fully convinced the wider public.
He also pointed out that potential disciplinary action from the Football Association remains unresolved, warning that a possible ban for Eckert could still create significant complications for the club moving forward.
Pardew was particularly critical of the tone of Solak’s interview, describing it as unusual and expressing doubts over how genuine parts of the messaging appeared. He suggested the repeated apologies did not entirely ring true to him and drew comparisons to other high-profile public interviews that he felt carried a similar tone.
Southampton have already faced criticism over their initial response to being removed from the Championship play-offs, with some fans and pundits accusing the club of failing to show enough accountability following the spying controversy.
As uncertainty surrounding Eckert’s future continues, attention now turns to whether any further action from football authorities could influence Southampton’s plans heading into next season.
