Celtic tipped to secure O’Riley-style signing after £5m breakthrough

Despite securing both the Scottish Premiership title and the Scottish Cup, Celtic face a crucial summer as major decisions loom ahead of the new campaign.

One of the biggest questions surrounds the managerial position. Martin O’Neill remains in the frame to continue in the role next season, although no final decision has yet been made by the club hierarchy.

Beyond the dugout, strengthening the squad will be a top priority after Celtic endured a mixed season in Europe and were pushed all the way in the league title race. A key concern for the Hoops is adding more attacking output from midfield.

Benjamin Nygren finished as Celtic’s most productive midfielder in front of goal with 16 strikes, while Reo Hatate and Callum McGregor both managed only two league goals. Arne Engels added five overall, though two came from the penalty spot.

As a result, Celtic could target a player capable of replicating the attacking influence once provided by former star Matt O’Riley, who contributed 27 goals and 35 assists during his time at Parkhead.

One player attracting interest is Tottenham Hotspur youngster Alfie Devine. Reports suggest Celtic have been monitoring the attacking midfielder closely, with Martin O’Neill believed to have watched him in action for Preston North End during the latter stages of the Championship season.

Preston, where Devine spent the 2025/26 campaign on loan, are understood to have activated an option to sign the 21-year-old permanently for around £5 million. However, while the Lancashire side are pushing to finalise a deal, Celtic and Wolves are also credited with interest.

That leaves the door open for Celtic to enter the race should they decide to test Tottenham’s resolve with a similar offer.

Devine could prove an exciting addition for the Scottish champions due to his attacking qualities from midfield. While Preston endured a difficult season, the young playmaker still impressed with eight goals and strong creative numbers in the Championship.

The England Under-20 international also showed his eye for goal at youth level with Tottenham, scoring regularly for their Under-21 side, and his profile suggests he could thrive in a dominant Celtic team where possession and attacking opportunities are far greater.

Though comparisons with O’Riley may be premature, Devine possesses the technical quality and attacking instinct to potentially develop into a similarly influential figure at Celtic Park if given the right environment to grow.
