Ex-Southampton CEO drops fresh Tonda Eckert sack claim amid uncertainty
Tonda Eckert sack claim emerges as ex-CEO weighs in on Southampton future
Southampton F.C. boss Tonda Eckert is facing mounting pressure following the club’s involvement in the Championship ‘Spygate’ scandal, with a former Premier League CEO now suggesting his position could be in serious doubt.

Southampton were removed from the Championship play-offs after an intern analyst was caught spying on semi-final opponents Middlesbrough F.C.. A disciplinary investigation later found the Saints had also gathered intelligence on Oxford United F.C. and Ipswich Town F.C. during the regular season, resulting in a four-point deduction for next campaign.
After Southampton’s removal, Hull City A.F.C. took their place and secured Premier League promotion at Wembley under Kim Hellberg.
Now, former Everton CEO Keith Wyness has weighed in on Eckert’s future, claiming the Southampton manager may have to “pay the penalty” if allegations linking him to internal messages and analyst instructions are proven true.
Reports have also suggested divisions inside the Southampton dressing room, with some players furious at the consequences of the scandal, while others continue to back Eckert after an impressive 19-game unbeaten run in the Championship.
The fallout could extend into the transfer market too, with uncertainty growing around several first-team players. Loan pair Juan Larios and Ben Brereton Díaz are reportedly expected to leave permanently, while others may seek Premier League moves after seeing promotion hopes disappear.
Defender Taylor Harwood-Bellis and midfielder Caspar Jander are among those linked with exits, with Jander reportedly keen to leave following the controversy.
Despite the pressure, Eckert still retains support from sections of the Southampton fanbase, leaving owners Sport Republic with a major decision to make ahead of next season
