Sheffield United make unexpected Jairo Riedewald contract reversal

Sheffield United are preparing for what promises to be a crucial summer rebuild after a disappointing Championship campaign, with the club already making some unexpected decisions regarding player contracts ahead of next season.

The Blades endured a frustrating 2025/26 season, ultimately finishing 13th in the Championship table after struggling badly during the opening months of the campaign. Just a year earlier, Chris Wilder’s side had reached the play-off final and looked capable of competing near the top end of the division, making this season’s decline all the more disappointing.

Rather than pushing for promotion, Sheffield United spent much of the early campaign battling to climb away from the relegation places, leaving them well adrift of the top six by the end of the season. In fact, Wilder’s men finished 13 points outside the play-off positions, never truly establishing themselves as genuine contenders for a return to the Premier League.

As preparations begin for a fresh promotion push, Wilder will be eager to strengthen key areas of the squad and ensure the club makes a much stronger start next term. The summer transfer window is expected to play a major role in shaping Sheffield United’s ambitions, but one of the first major decisions has already caught many supporters by surprise.

The club has officially confirmed that Jairo Riedewald will depart Bramall Lane after his contract was not renewed, despite previous indications suggesting the midfielder could remain at the club.

Riedewald joined Sheffield United as a free agent in October following his exit from Belgian side Royal Antwerp and quickly became an important player under Wilder. Earlier reports had suggested the Blades were expected to activate an option in his deal, with the player also reportedly open to discussing a longer-term stay in South Yorkshire.

However, the club’s retained list revealed an unexpected change of direction, confirming that the 29-year-old’s spell with Sheffield United has come to an end.

During his time at Bramall Lane, Riedewald established himself as a popular figure among supporters and made a solid contribution on the pitch. He featured in 25 Championship matches and chipped in with three goals, earning praise for his performances and versatility in midfield.

Alongside Riedewald’s departure, Sheffield United also confirmed the exits of experienced trio Tom Davies, Danny Ings and Ben Mee in what were viewed as more anticipated decisions. Meanwhile, goalkeeper Adam Davies will remain with the club after an option in his contract was triggered, extending his stay for another year.

News of Riedewald’s exit has not gone down particularly well with sections of the fanbase, many of whom had hoped to see him remain part of Wilder’s plans moving forward. Some supporters have speculated that financial considerations may have influenced the decision, especially following the introduction of new Championship financial regulations approved by clubs last week.

With a pivotal summer now ahead, Sheffield United face important decisions both in terms of recruitment and retaining stability, as Wilder looks to guide his boyhood club back into promotion contention after an underwhelming season.
