Rangers reach decision on Danny Röhl’s future after disastrous run of form

The Rangers hierarchy have reportedly decided to stand by manager Danny Röhl despite increasing pressure from supporters calling for a change following a disappointing end to the season.

According to reports from Football Insider, the Ibrox board remain committed to the German coach and are prepared to continue backing his long-term vision, even after a campaign that has left many fans frustrated. Rangers ultimately finished third in the Scottish Premiership, with their post-split collapse proving particularly damaging to hopes of challenging for the title.

At one stage, Rangers were firmly in contention and sat only a point behind league leaders Hearts when the split began. However, a disastrous sequence of four straight defeats quickly derailed their challenge, ending any realistic hopes of lifting the trophy and increasing criticism of Röhl’s leadership. The dramatic downturn in form has led sections of the fanbase to question whether he remains the right man to lead the club forward.

Tensions surrounding the manager intensified further after controversy over James Tavernier’s final appearance at Ibrox. The long-serving captain, viewed by many supporters as a club legend, was left out of the starting line-up, with Röhl opting not to include him from the outset. The decision sparked backlash among supporters, many of whom believed Tavernier deserved a more fitting send-off.

Despite mounting criticism and frustration from fans, Rangers’ board are believed to have reassured Röhl about his position, signalling their intention to continue with the current project rather than make another managerial change.

Club officials reportedly see stability as key after a turbulent season that also included difficulties under former boss Russell Martin earlier in the campaign.

The season has been described by some observers as deeply disappointing, with poor performances on the pitch compounded by off-field issues and growing unrest around the squad. Röhl’s handling of the Tavernier situation, in particular, has reportedly added to the pressure, with some insiders labelling recent developments as “horrendous” from a public relations standpoint.

However, if Rangers are to justify sticking with the manager, there is an expectation that improvements must arrive quickly next season.

A strong start to the campaign could be crucial in rebuilding trust with supporters, especially as the club faces the challenge of replacing an influential figure such as Tavernier. Recruitment will also play a major role, with Rangers expected to focus on identifying smart additions capable of helping them compete more effectively at the top end of Scottish football.

After a season widely viewed as an underachievement, Rangers are likely to undergo a period of reflection as they seek to avoid another turbulent campaign marked by instability both on and off the pitch.

Should the club eventually decide to move in a different direction, questions remain over who could realistically replace Röhl.

One name frequently linked with a potential return is former manager Steven Gerrard, who enjoyed major success during his previous spell at Ibrox between 2018 and 2021.

With the Englishman now available after departing Saudi Arabian side Al-Ettifaq, some supporters may view a reunion as an attractive option if results fail to improve.
