Kris Boyd left raging after controversial Celtic penalty leaves title race on knife edge
Kris Boyd completely lost patience after Celtic F.C.’s dramatic stoppage-time winner against Motherwell F.C., launching into an explosive rant over the controversial penalty decision that may have swung the Premiership title race decisively back towards Celtic Park.
For a brief moment, Celtic looked set to surrender major ground in the title battle after Liam Gordon fired Motherwell level at 2-2 late in the game. With Heart of Midlothian F.C. already beating Falkirk elsewhere, the momentum in the race appeared to be shifting dramatically.

But deep into stoppage time, chaos erupted inside the Motherwell penalty area.
Auston Trusty kept the attack alive under pressure before Sam Nicholson was adjudged to have handled the ball while challenging the Celtic defender. Following a VAR review, referee John Beaton pointed immediately to the spot, allowing Kelechi Iheanacho to bury the decisive penalty in the 98th minute.
Replay angles appeared to show the ball changing direction after making contact with Nicholson’s raised arm, while Trusty was also involved physically in the challenge. However, Boyd fiercely rejected the decision throughout Sky Sports’ live coverage.
The former Rangers F.C. striker repeatedly argued the speed and trajectory of the ball proved it could not have struck Nicholson’s hand first. As his frustration grew, Boyd widened his criticism to include several recent officiating controversies involving Celtic, including claims that Alistair Johnston should have been sent off against Rangers and accusations that Hearts were denied a penalty against Motherwell the previous weekend.
Boyd described the latest decision as “incredible” and insisted serious questions needed to be asked about the consistency of officiating in Scottish football.
He argued it was “impossible” for the ball to travel the way it did if it had genuinely struck Nicholson’s hand first and questioned how VAR could be fully certain about the incident. Boyd also defended Nicholson’s body position, suggesting the Motherwell player had nowhere natural to place his arm while challenging for the ball with Trusty.
By the end of the discussion, Boyd appeared almost resigned to the controversy, claiming people were no longer even surprised when major calls seemed to go in Celtic’s favour.
In the end, however, Celtic capitalised on the pressure they created late in the match. Trusty’s aggressive reaction inside the box forced Motherwell into a desperate defensive situation, and Nicholson’s raised arm ultimately gave officials a decision to make.
What clearly intensified Boyd’s anger was the significance of the moment.
At 2-2, the title race looked ready to swing back towards Hearts. Seconds later, Iheanacho’s penalty completely transformed the landscape again, leaving Celtic just one victory away from sealing the Premiership crown.
