Ex-Rangers F.C. ace attracting transfer interest with potential Ibrox comeback verdict emerging

Former Rangers F.C. midfielder Todd Cantwell is reportedly expected to become one of the key names to watch during the summer transfer window, with growing suggestions that his future at Blackburn Rovers F.C. is far from secure.

The 27-year-old spent two seasons at Ibrox after joining Rangers from Norwich City F.C. in January 2023. Although Cantwell arrived in Glasgow with high expectations following his Premier League breakthrough at Norwich, his spell in Scotland proved turbulent both on and off the pitch.

Despite flashes of quality during his time at Rangers, the midfielder’s relationship with the club became increasingly strained. Cantwell was involved in public disagreements with former Rangers boss Philippe Clement and regularly found himself at the centre of media attention, including a well-publicised feud with former Celtic F.C. striker and pundit Chris Sutton.

He eventually departed Ibrox on transfer deadline day in the summer of 2024, making the switch to Blackburn Rovers, where he has since become club captain and one of the Championship side’s highest earners.

However, uncertainty is now growing around his long-term future at Ewood Park. Cantwell’s current contract is due to expire next season, and reports suggest Blackburn have yet to indicate whether they intend to offer him an extension. That situation has inevitably sparked speculation over a possible move elsewhere this summer.

According to Football Insider, Cantwell has attracted attention from several clubs in both the Championship and overseas. Reports even suggested Rangers had been monitoring the midfielder’s situation, though the same outlet claims an emotional return to Ibrox is considered highly unlikely.

The report states Rangers have no interest in re-signing Cantwell because it is believed he “burned bridges” with both the club and sections of the support before leaving Glasgow.

Much of that tension appears linked to the circumstances surrounding his Rangers exit. Clement previously revealed publicly that Cantwell wanted to leave the club following internal disagreements, comments which contributed to a difficult and messy end to his time at Ibrox.

Cantwell later disputed suggestions that he refused to play for Rangers, insisting after joining Blackburn that his departure was motivated by personal reasons rather than a lack of commitment to the club.

Speaking after his move to Ewood Park, the midfielder explained that discussions with Clement had taken place internally for some time before the transfer was completed. While he stressed he respected the Rangers coaching staff, Cantwell admitted he no longer felt the club was the right environment for him personally.

Although a Rangers reunion now appears improbable, the midfielder remains a player with significant experience and ability, meaning interest in his services is likely to continue building as the summer transfer window approaches.
