Charlie Austin criticises Southampton F.C. amid Middlesbrough spying controversy
Charlie Austin has strongly criticised the spying allegations surrounding Southampton F.C. ahead of their crucial EFL Championship play-off semi-final against Middlesbrough F.C..
Southampton, managed by Tonda Eckert, travel to the Riverside Stadium for the first leg before hosting Boro in the return fixture next week. The tie is viewed as one of the toughest to predict after both teams finished the regular season level on 80 points, with Southampton securing fourth place only through goal difference.

However, the build-up to the semi-final has been overshadowed by allegations that a Southampton analyst was caught filming Middlesbrough’s training session from a concealed position near the club’s facilities.
Reacting to the controversy, former Saints striker Austin called for tougher punishment if the allegations are proven true. Speaking on talkSPORT, he questioned why such tactics would even be necessary in modern football given the vast amount of match footage and analytical data already available to clubs.
Austin argued that teams already have access to every league game their opponents have played throughout the season, making any attempt to secretly observe training sessions unnecessary and unacceptable.
The incident has drawn comparisons to the infamous 2019 case involving Leeds United F.C., who were fined £200,000 after being found guilty of spying on a Derby County F.C. training session.
Under current EFL regulations, clubs found guilty of filming or observing opposition training within 72 hours of a match can face punishments including fines, points deductions, or even transfer embargoes.
Austin suggested that individuals responsible should face lengthy bans from football, insisting there is “no need” for such behaviour in the modern game.
The controversy has added an extra layer of tension to an already massive play-off clash, with Southampton or Middlesbrough set to face either Millwall F.C. or Hull City A.F.C. in the final.
For now, though, the focus around the tie remains firmly on the allegations rather than the football itself.
