Carlos Carvalhal makes surprising claim about Sheffield Wednesday F.C.
Carlos Carvalhal has continued to follow Sheffield Wednesday F.C. closely since his time in charge between 2015 and 2017.
The Hillsborough club are currently enduring a difficult period, having entered administration and already been relegated to League One. Despite their struggles, they showed resilience last weekend by holding Championship leaders Coventry City F.C. to a goalless draw.

Under Henrik Pedersen, Wednesday are still chasing just their second win of the season as they prepare to face Charlton Athletic F.C., while also dealing with a negative points total due to deductions.
Off the pitch, a takeover has yet to be finalised, although Arise Consortium, led by David Storch, is making progress. Even so, the club is expected to begin next season with a 15-point deduction after failing to meet creditor repayment thresholds.
Speaking on talkSPORT, Carvalhal expressed his admiration for the club, describing it as a “Premier League-level” side because of its passionate fanbase. He highlighted the remarkable support shown by Wednesday fans, including their sold-out away allocation against Coventry despite the team’s struggles.
That backing was rewarded with a determined performance, as Pedersen’s side battled to a 0-0 draw against a team on the verge of Premier League promotion.
Carvalhal’s comments reflect the enduring reputation of Sheffield Wednesday as one of England’s historic clubs, having been a founding member of the Premier League. While their current campaign has been one of the toughest in their history, supporters have remained loyal throughout.
During his tenure, Carvalhal guided the club to back-to-back Championship play-off appearances in 2016 and 2017—something they have not achieved since. His time in charge remains a rare bright period in recent years, including memorable moments such as a 3-0 victory over Arsenal F.C. in 2015.
Despite ongoing difficulties linked to former owner Dejphon Chansiri, fans still look back fondly on Carvalhal’s spell, which provided hope and memorable successes during a challenging era.
