What points deduction could West Bromwich Albion face if guilty of breaking P&S regulations?
West Bromwich Albion could face a points deduction if they are found guilty of breaching profit and sustainability (P&S) rules.
According to reports from the Telegraph on Monday, the Championship side has been charged by the English Football League after exceeding the £39 million loss threshold over the three-year period leading up to the 2024–25 season.

Despite the off-field concerns, West Brom have improved significantly under interim manager James Morrison. Since taking charge, the team has gone seven games unbeaten, following an initial defeat to Oxford United at the Kassam Stadium.
Their recent form includes a draw against promotion-chasing Millwall, as well as stalemates with Southampton and Wrexham. They also recorded an impressive 3-0 win over Hull City at the Hawthorns.
Morrison has guided Albion to a position two points above the relegation zone, with Portsmouth, Oxford United, and Leicester City currently below them with four matches remaining.
Reports from the BBC suggest that West Brom could face a deduction of between two and three points if found guilty. A penalty of that size could drop them into the bottom three in what is shaping up to be a tight relegation battle. However, due to the timeline of proceedings, a final decision is unlikely before the season concludes on May 2.
If the club finishes just above the relegation zone, a delayed punishment could create controversy among teams that are relegated.
In response, West Brom released a statement acknowledging the reports but maintaining that they have complied with the rules. The club confirmed it is cooperating with the EFL’s investigation but declined to comment further at this stage.
They now have 14 days to respond to the charge, with a hearing expected within 28 days.
The alleged breach is believed to be minor. According to the BBC, exceeding limits by up to £2 million typically results in a three-point deduction, while a £2–4 million breach could lead to a four-point penalty. However, West Brom may receive some leniency due to improving financial results, potentially reducing the sanction.
For comparison, Sheffield Wednesday were handed an 18-point deduction this season due to administration and financial issues, while Leicester City have been docked six points for breaching P&S rules.
