Sheffield Wednesday faces points deduction despite criticism

Sheffield Wednesday look set to receive a 15-point deduction in League One next season, as part of EFL rules tied to David Storch’s takeover falling short of creditor requirements. This follows the collapse of James Bord’s previous takeover, which cost over £4 million to keep the club afloat.

Former Everton CEO Keith Wyness told Football Insider that while Henry Winter criticized the deduction as “absolutely ridiculous,” the rules are being applied consistently. Wyness suggested Winter may have been appealing to Sheffield Wednesday fans, and noted that leniency could have been considered, but consistency is key across the league.

Wyness added that the club remains a “sleeping giant” with great heritage, but financial mismanagement has left the administrator struggling. He believes a suspended penalty might have been more realistic, but the rulebook must be followed.

Meanwhile, Sheffield Wednesday are reportedly tracking Dundee goalkeeper Jon McCracken, who could leave the Scottish Premiership side this summer, with Blackburn Rovers and QPR also reportedly interested.
