Ally McCoist believes Robbie Keane would be the ideal successor to Martin O’Neill as Celtic F.C. manager.

Keane, who enjoyed a loan spell at Celtic during his playing career, has made an impressive start in management since stepping into the role in 2023. The 45-year-old guided Maccabi Tel Aviv F.C. to a league title in his debut season before repeating the achievement with Ferencvárosi TC just months after taking charge in early 2025.

The former striker has already been linked with a return to Glasgow, particularly following Brendan Rodgers’ departure last October. His credentials have also been backed by O’Neill, who considers Keane a strong candidate for the role.

O’Neill himself returned to the dugout in January on a short-term deal after Wilfried Nancy was dismissed just over a month into his tenure, having endured a difficult run of results.

There remains uncertainty over whether O’Neill will continue beyond the current season, although McCoist suggested he expects the experienced manager to step aside. Despite that, O’Neill could yet cap his spell with a remarkable achievement, as Celtic remain on course for the league title under challenging circumstances.

Injuries to key players such as Kasper Schmeichel, Cameron Carter-Vickers and Alistair Johnston—along with long-term absentee Jota—have made the campaign especially difficult. Concerns over recruitment have also added to the challenge.

Even so, O’Neill is being credited with restoring unity around the club, helping rebuild the connection between supporters, including the Green Brigade, and the board during a crucial period.

McCoist praised Keane’s growing managerial résumé, highlighting his success abroad and backing him as a strong contender if Celtic opt for a new direction.
