Former Celtic chief Peter Lawwell takes on major European role after leaving the club
After leaving Celtic, Peter Lawwell was kept on by the European Club Association, so he will continue to play at the highest level of football in Europe. The former head of the Hoops quit his job at the club last year, which meant he was no longer Vice-Chair of the organization.
That job required him to be actively involved with a club, which he no longer does. This makes sure that Scottish football is still talked about in ways that affect the European game. A big part of how events, schedules, and the overall direction of club football across Europe are talked about is through the European Club Association.
Lawwell has been a part of that setting since 2014. During that time, he made contacts and gained power at different levels of the European game, especially since Celtic played in many UEFA tournaments. That’s what the EFC said:
“The Board asked Peter to stay on as an Independent Board Member.” Our Chairman, the whole Board, and the group as a whole value his years of experience and leadership, so we are thrilled that he will be staying in a key leadership role with EFC.
Even though his job title has changed, he is still at the same table where important decisions are made. Issues like how to qualify for competitions and how money is split between competitions are included that directly affect teams like Celtic. When Scottish clubs talk about these things, having someone with that background there makes a difference. Since the domestic game isn’t as focused on money as many European leagues are, having a voice in those rooms is more important. That event was mentioned in the official statement that came out after the meeting.
