Charlton Athletic send transfer warning as Conor Coady salary at Wrexham AFC emerges
Charlton Athletic’s return to the Championship for the first time since the 2019/20 season is shaping up to be a successful one, with the Addicks expected to secure survival comfortably. Considering the ambitions of fellow promoted sides like Birmingham City and Wrexham AFC, Charlton needed to outperform three established second-tier teams to avoid an immediate drop back to League One. Although the squad struggled slightly between November and January, they have since regained stability.
A key factor in this improved form has been veteran defender Conor Coady, who joined Charlton on loan from Wrexham in the latter stages of the January transfer window. Despite having featured only in the EFL Cup for Wrexham prior to this, Coady has made a noticeable impact at The Valley. Interestingly, he has often been deployed in midfield rather than defence, yet his presence has helped Nathan Jones’s side keep four clean sheets in seven Championship matches he has started.

Despite his contributions, Charlton fan pundit Chris Woodward has suggested that making Coady’s loan move permanent may not be the best idea. Woodward argues that “he is the type of player you want when you’re struggling or scrapping for survival, but that’s about it,” noting that Charlton should now aim to establish themselves away from relegation danger.
Coady’s wages could also be a limiting factor. The 33-year-old, who spent seven years as a Premier League centre-back with Wolves and had a season back in the Championship with Leicester City in 2023/24, has historically earned a significant salary. Even in the Championship, Wrexham AFC were able to offer him a competitive package.
According to Capology, Coady has earned an estimated £25,000 per week this season—a figure roughly £30,000 per week lower than his wages at Wolves and Everton, and £50,000 per week below his Leicester City pay. At Charlton, he is currently the club’s top earner, around £5,000 per week more than goalkeeper Thomas Kaminski.
