Celtic’s financial reward revealed after important Besiktas win
Martin O’Neill’s Celtic side recovered from an early setback to secure their first victory in the Europa League league phase, ending a run of three consecutive defeats in the competition.
The result against Besiktas was not only important for Celtic’s hopes of progressing in Europe but also brought a financial reward from UEFA.

European football’s governing body distributes additional prize money to clubs based on their results during the league phase, with teams receiving payments for both victories and draws.
Celtic’s success against Besiktas therefore earned the Scottish champions an extra €450,000, equivalent to approximately £375,000, in UEFA prize money.
That payment is separate from the €4.31 million participation fee already awarded to every club competing in this season’s Europa League league phase.
There is also more money available as the competition progresses. Celtic would collect another €300,000 if they secure qualification for the knockout round play-offs, while reaching the round of 16 would bring a further €1.75 million.
Even if O’Neill’s side fail to progress beyond the league phase, they are still guaranteed an additional payment based on their final position in the standings.
The team finishing bottom will receive €75,000, with that amount increasing by another €75,000 for every position higher in the table.
Europa League prize money breakdown
- League phase victory: €450,000 per club.
- League phase draw: €150,000 per club.
- Qualification for knockout round play-offs: €300,000 per club.
- Qualification for the round of 16: €1.75 million per club.
- Qualification for the quarter-finals: €2.5 million per club.
Celtic’s victory over Besiktas has therefore delivered an important financial boost, with further rewards available if O’Neill can guide his team deeper into the competition.
