Arsenal Join Race for Highly-Rated Rangers Defender as Ibrox Face Transfer Interest
Arsenal Tracking Rangers Teenager Kai Urban as Ibrox Face Fight to Keep Rising Star
Arsenal are reportedly monitoring Rangers youngster Kai Urban as sporting director Andrea Berta continues to identify promising young players who could strengthen the club’s long-term plans.
The Gunners have made an encouraging start to the campaign under Mikel Arteta, with their immediate focus on Wednesday’s Champions League encounter against Slavia Prague.
Arsenal remain unbeaten in Europe this season, having collected two victories from their opening three fixtures. Arteta has also received a welcome injury boost ahead of the trip to the Czech Republic, with William Saliba returning to contention.
Saliba hands Arsenal timely injury boost
The French defender is available again after recovering from the back problem that had kept him out since the summer’s World Cup.
Saliba has returned to training and featured for 45 minutes in a behind-closed-doors fixture last week. Arteta confirmed that the centre-back is feeling positive and could be involved against Slavia Prague.
Speaking about his recovery, the Arsenal manager said:
“He’s in a really good place. I think the process and the timings and in the manner the injury has been dealt with, and especially the feelings that Willy has been having along the way, they’ve been very, very positive.
“He feels very comfortable. He played 45 minutes [behind] closed doors last week and he feels ready to go. So whether we use him or not now is a matter of what the team needs.”
Arsenal’s Champions League campaign has included a 1-0 victory away to Napoli, a 3-0 home win over Lille and a 2-2 draw against Bayern Munich.
Arteta considers handing Dowman starting opportunity
Meanwhile, teenage prospect Max Dowman could be in contention for a starting place against the Czech side.
The 16-year-old remains eligible to feature in the Champions League despite being sent off during Arsenal’s recent Carabao Cup match against Fleetwood Town.
Arteta suggested that Dowman has done enough to put himself in contention, although the final decision will rest with the manager.
“It’s another year in his career and he’s shown that every time he’s played with us, he has a lot to offer. So that would be now a matter of a choice from my side to pick him,” Arteta explained.
The Arsenal boss also revealed that the youngster has maintained a positive attitude following his recent setback, describing the experience as an opportunity to learn.
“He’s been in great spirit. When you see the kid and today we spent some time together as well talking about things in training, it’s always super positive.”
Arsenal keeping close eye on Rangers prospect Kai Urban
Arsenal’s interest in developing young players could also influence their transfer strategy, with Rangers teenager Kai Urban emerging as a potential target.
According to journalist Pete O’Rourke, the Premier League side are monitoring the highly-rated right-back after being impressed by his performances at youth level.
Urban, just 15, has caught the eye with his athletic qualities and progress within the Rangers academy. He has also represented Scotland at Under-15 level and was recently selected for the country’s squad for the FIFA Under-15 World Cup and Festival.
There is currently no suggestion that Arsenal have submitted an official offer or made a formal approach to Rangers. However, interest from England could create a significant challenge for the Ibrox club as they look to protect one of their emerging talents.
The Gunners are also looking to strengthen their senior squad, with Bournemouth forward Eli Junior Kroupi among the players linked with a move to north London.
However, Urban’s situation demonstrates that Berta is also looking beyond established first-team footballers as Arsenal work to build for the future.
With Arteta having signed a new contract in October, the club have a degree of managerial stability that allows them to plan their recruitment over the longer term.
For Rangers, the prospect of losing one of their most promising youngsters to a Premier League club before he has even signed his first professional contract would represent a major disappointment.
The Scottish side will be determined to keep Urban at Ibrox and oversee his development, but Arsenal’s reported interest could make that task considerably more difficult.
