Martin O’Neill Sends Celtic Exit Message With Brutally Honest Financial Remark
Charlie Mulgrew Makes Martin O’Neill Payoff Claim as Celtic Manager Faces Fresh Pressure
Charlie Mulgrew believes Martin O’Neill would be justified in demanding a financial settlement if Celtic decided to part ways with him following the club’s recent struggles.
The former Hoops defender suggested he would not walk away from a lucrative contract without receiving the money he was entitled to if he found himself in the manager’s position.
O’Neill’s future has come under renewed scrutiny following Celtic’s disappointing 2-0 defeat to Falkirk on Sunday.
The result leaves Celtic four points clear of Rangers at the top of the Scottish Premiership, having played one game more, while their recent performances have raised serious questions about the direction of the team.
Mulgrew acknowledged that he could not speak on behalf of his former manager but explained that he would be reluctant to surrender the remaining value of his contract.
He also suggested that O’Neill may have to consider how he wants his Celtic legacy to be remembered.
“But whether he wants to keep his legacy and leave while he’s top of the league remains to be seen. Who knows?”
O’Neill’s Celtic contract comes under spotlight
Celtic confirmed in June that O’Neill had signed a one-year contract, which included an option for an additional season.
That agreement followed an impressive spell in charge last season, when the experienced manager helped the club secure both the Scottish Premiership title and Scottish Cup.
Mulgrew has previously questioned why O’Neill would voluntarily walk away from the contract offered after delivering such success.
The former defender’s latest comments have brought the financial aspect of the manager’s future back into focus, although any potential settlement would ultimately depend on the terms of his agreement with the club.
Celtic must improve despite league position
There is little doubt that O’Neill made a significant impact when he returned to Celtic last season.
He inherited a difficult situation and helped transform the campaign, ultimately guiding the Hoops to a domestic double.
However, previous achievements cannot indefinitely protect the manager from scrutiny over the team’s current performances.
Celtic have managed just three victories in their last ten matches across all competitions, while the defeat to Falkirk has intensified concerns about their consistency.
Remaining top of the Premiership provides some reassurance, but the gap to Rangers is no longer particularly comfortable, especially with Celtic having played an additional fixture.
O’Neill still has an opportunity to turn things around, but the pressure is increasing.
For Mulgrew, the question is not simply whether the manager should remain in the job. It is also whether O’Neill would be prepared to walk away from the remaining value of his contract if Celtic decided his time at Parkhead was coming to an end.
