Henrik Pedersen replacement: Sheffield Wednesday given clear recommendation
EFL expert Callum Fowler believes Dave Challinor should be the leading contender to take charge of Sheffield Wednesday following Henrik Pedersen’s departure.
The Owls are searching for a permanent head coach after deciding to dismiss Pedersen last weekend, following a disappointing 2-0 defeat against Doncaster Rovers.
Fowler has identified Challinor as the most logical appointment for Wednesday, pointing to his existing relationship with sporting director Simon Wilson as a potential advantage. The pair previously worked together at Stockport County, which could help provide continuity as the club looks to move forward.

While Fowler has played down the possibility of Manchester United-linked Kieran McKenna taking over at Hillsborough, he believes former Sheffield Wednesday manager Paul Heckingbottom could represent a realistic alternative if the club decides to pursue a different candidate.
Pedersen’s final weeks in charge ended with consecutive defeats, results that ultimately contributed to the club’s decision to make a change in the dugout.
The managerial search also represents an important moment for Sheffield Wednesday’s new ownership. Arise Capital completed its takeover last May, making this the first time the new owners will oversee the appointment of a permanent head coach.
Pedersen took charge in the summer of 2025 after previously serving as an assistant to Danny Rohl. However, his spell as head coach has now come to an end, leaving the club searching for someone capable of improving results and providing greater stability.
In the meantime, Matt Hamshaw has been appointed interim head coach while the club considers its options for the permanent position.
Sheffield Wednesday urged to appoint Dave Challinor
Challinor’s previous working relationship with Wilson could make him an attractive candidate as Sheffield Wednesday assess their next move. Familiarity between the sporting director and a potential head coach may help streamline the appointment process and establish a shared vision for the club.
However, Wednesday could still consider other candidates, with Heckingbottom emerging as another name worth monitoring as the search for Pedersen’s successor continues.
