Rod Stewart opens up on Green Brigade controversy with Martin O’Neill letter revelation
Rod Stewart backs Green Brigade as Celtic icon reveals letter sent to Martin O’Neill
Celtic superfan Rod Stewart has refused to condemn the Green Brigade over their decision to boycott home matches, admitting that the supporters may have legitimate reasons for their frustration with the club.
The legendary singer has had a complicated relationship with the Parkhead ultras over the years, with the group previously targeting his political views through provocative banners.
However, Stewart has taken a more understanding position as the Green Brigade prepare to miss Celtic’s home fixtures in the Europa League and Scottish Cup, including the meeting with Celta Vigo.

Speaking to talkSPORT, the 81-year-old acknowledged the negative atmosphere surrounding the dispute but stressed that the players must not allow the situation to affect their performances.
“It’s so negative, and I hope it doesn’t ring down to the players’ thoughts as they come out the tunnel,” Stewart said.
Despite his concerns, the Celtic supporter admitted that the Green Brigade could have valid complaints about the club’s recruitment.
“I think maybe they’ve got a point, the supporters. Our transfers have been sloppy sometimes. But then, on the other side of it, look how many trophies we’ve won,” he explained.
Stewart believes the responsibility now rests with the players to win back the supporters’ confidence, particularly with a section of Celtic Park expected to remain empty during the boycott.
He also called on the remaining supporters to make their voices heard, insisting that a couple of consecutive victories could quickly improve Celtic’s position.
The singer made it clear that victory against Celta Vigo would be crucial if Celtic are to maintain their hopes of progressing in Europe.
Rod Stewart reveals letter sent to Martin O’Neill
Away from the Green Brigade controversy, Stewart also revealed that he had offered Martin O’Neill some advice on how to set up Celtic’s attack.
The singer disclosed that he had written directly to the Hoops manager, recommending a front three featuring Callum Osmand, Camilo Duran and Haissem Hassan.
He also suggested using Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain in midfield, believing Celtic needed additional physical presence in that area of the pitch.
Stewart’s preferred attacking combination was subsequently used during Celtic’s emphatic 7-1 victory over Hearts on Sunday, with the result providing a significant boost following a difficult spell.
Speaking to radio presenter Alan Brazil, Stewart explained how he had sent his recommendations to O’Neill the previous week.
“It’s funny you should say that, because I posted something last week to Martin,” he revealed.
“I said, ‘Dear Martin… my starting front three [against Hearts] would be Osmand, Duran and Hassan, and Chamberlain in the midfield, because we lack a bit of muscle’.”
The result has given Celtic renewed encouragement as they prepare for their European fixture, although Stewart’s comments suggest there are still concerns among supporters about recruitment and the wider atmosphere surrounding the club.
While he has acknowledged the Green Brigade’s grievances, the Celtic icon is also urging the team and the remaining fans to unite behind O’Neill as the club looks to build on its impressive performance against Hearts.
