O’Neill’s Celtic Call: Three Standouts Face Uncertain Futures
O’Neill Faces Tough Celtic Decisions as Donovan, Osmand and Murray Battle for Places
Martin O’Neill has turned to several promising youngsters to help Celtic navigate a difficult spell, but the return of key senior players could soon force the manager into some difficult selection decisions.
The Hoops appeared to reach a low point when they suffered three consecutive defeats before the international break, leaving O’Neill questioning his future at Parkhead.
However, Celtic have responded positively in the Scottish Premiership, winning their last two league matches, including a stunning 7-1 demolition of Hearts on Sunday. Those results have strengthened their position at the top of the table.
European competition remains a concern, though. Celtic are still searching for their first Europa League victory ahead of Thursday’s crucial meeting with Celta Vigo, with progression to the next round hanging in the balance.
O’Neill could once again need his younger players to deliver, but competition for places is expected to increase as several experienced first-team regulars edge closer to returning.
Callum Osmand faces fight to retain his Celtic place
Callum Osmand enjoyed an impressive afternoon against Hearts, scoring twice despite being deployed out wide rather than in his natural centre-forward role.
The youngster produced an excellent first-half performance before being substituted, with Celtic continuing to manage his workload following a lengthy spell on the sidelines.
O’Neill was full of praise for the forward after the match, saying: “I thought he was really, really good, played very, very strongly. That’s not really his position at the end of it all, although he adapted brilliantly.”
Osmand’s performance has strengthened his case for further opportunities, and he could feature again against Celta Vigo if he is considered fit enough.
However, the youngster faces a significant challenge to maintain his place once Celtic’s attacking options are fully available. Jota is gradually building his match fitness after more than a year out, while Yang Hyun-jun is also approaching a return from a hamstring injury.
Yang had been in good form before departing for the Asian Games in early September, giving O’Neill another option to consider when he becomes available.
Osmand has shown that he can make an impact, but he may need to maintain his impressive form to remain ahead of his more experienced teammates.
Dane Murray could make way for Celtic’s senior defenders
Dane Murray has also taken advantage of opportunities in the first team, delivering another encouraging display while deputising for Cameron Carter-Vickers.
The 23-year-old has stepped in during Carter-Vickers’ absence with a muscular strain, but the American defender has returned to training and is expected to be available again soon.
Auston Trusty is also temporarily unavailable following the death of his father, with the defender understandably being given time away to deal with the pers
