West Ham could receive welcome boost as Southampton face potential setback

West Ham United could receive a significant boost ahead of Saturday’s Championship meeting with Southampton, with Cyle Larin’s fitness emerging as a potential concern for the visiting side.

Nuno Espírito Santo’s team will welcome the Saints to the London Stadium looking to extend their impressive unbeaten run in the Championship to 10 matches.

After a difficult start to the campaign, the Hammers have gradually found their rhythm and are beginning to look like serious contenders in the race for promotion. Their recent performances have strengthened expectations that they can challenge for the second-tier title.

However, Southampton’s visit represents another important test for Nuno’s side, particularly with the visitors possessing attacking threats capable of causing problems. The potential absence of one of their key forwards could therefore work in West Ham’s favour.

Cyle Larin injury concern emerges ahead of Southampton’s West Ham clash

Southampton were unable to find a breakthrough in their previous outing against Bolton Wanderers, settling for a frustrating 0-0 draw at St Mary’s.

The result was made more concerning by the injury sustained by Larin, who was forced off shortly before half-time.

The Canadian international has become an important figure for the Saints since arriving on the south coast in January 2026, and his potential absence would leave manager Tonda Eckert with an important decision to make in attack.

Lewis Dobbin replaced Larin against Bolton, but his contribution in front of goal has been limited since joining Southampton from Aston Villa during the summer.

Divin Mubama was another option available to Eckert, although Dobbin was preferred when the manager needed to make his change against Bolton.

With Southampton preparing for a demanding away fixture against West Ham, Larin’s fitness could become a major talking point in the build-up to Saturday’s encounter.

Eckert has offered some encouragement, admitting that he is hopeful the striker’s injury is not serious and expressing optimism that he could be available for the trip to London.

Nevertheless, Southampton will need to assess the situation carefully before determining whether Larin is ready to feature.

Nuno Espírito Santo could benefit from Southampton selection concern

From West Ham’s perspective, Larin’s potential absence would represent a welcome development ahead of a fixture that could have important implications for both clubs’ promotion ambitions.

Nuno will be aware of the threat the striker poses, particularly given his importance to Southampton’s attacking options since arriving at the club.

Without Larin, the Saints could be forced to adjust their forward line, potentially giving West Ham a different challenge to prepare for defensively.

However, Southampton will be encouraged by Eckert’s comments and will hope their leading attacking option can recover in time to feature at the London Stadium.

For now, Larin’s availability remains uncertain, leaving both managers waiting for further clarity as preparations continue.

West Ham will undoubtedly welcome any advantage they can gain, but Nuno’s immediate focus will be on ensuring his side maintains its strong run of form against one of its promotion rivals.
