What’s Next for Lyall Cameron at Rangers as Contract Situation Comes Under Scrutiny After ‘Terrific’ Scenes
Lyall Cameron is making the most of his loan spell at Dundee United after struggling to establish himself at Rangers under Derek McInnes.
The Scottish midfielder moved to Tannadice Park for the remainder of the season after falling outside McInnes’ plans at Ibrox.
However, the 24-year-old is beginning to show why Rangers moved to secure his services, having started Dundee United’s last four Scottish Premiership matches under Jim Goodwin.
Cameron has made an impressive contribution during that run, scoring twice and registering four assists to help the Tangerines.
His latest standout moment came against St Johnstone, when he struck an 79th-minute equaliser to earn Dundee United a 1-1 draw at McDiarmid Park.
The midfielder’s decision to join Rangers’ city rivals has so far proved beneficial, allowing him to rediscover his form and enjoy the regular football he struggled to find at Ibrox.
If he maintains his current level of performance, questions will inevitably arise over what role he could have at Rangers when his loan spell ends.
When does Lyall Cameron’s Rangers contract expire?
Cameron has become an increasingly important figure for Goodwin, and his recent performances underline the value of securing regular minutes at this stage of his career.
Rangers agreed a pre-contract deal with the midfielder in February 2025 after he impressed during his time at Dundee.
He subsequently moved to Ibrox ahead of the 2025-26 campaign, with Dundee receiving £400,000 in compensation for his departure.
Cameron signed a four-year contract with the Glasgow club, meaning his current deal is due to expire at the end of May 2029.
That leaves Rangers in a position to assess his progress without facing an immediate contractual decision.
For now, the midfielder remains under contract at Ibrox and is expected to return to McInnes’ squad when his loan spell concludes, unless Dundee United negotiate a permanent transfer.
His performances at Tannadice could influence the manager’s thinking, particularly if Cameron continues to deliver goals and assists consistently.
With competition for places in the Rangers midfield remaining fierce, the remainder of the season could prove crucial in determining whether he can earn another opportunity at his parent club.
Kris Boyd reacts to Lyall Cameron’s Rangers exit
Kris Boyd has been encouraged by Cameron’s response to his difficult spell at Rangers, highlighting the importance of playing regularly rather than allowing his development to stall.
The midfielder initially joined Aberdeen on loan earlier in the year, a move that brought its own challenges given the longstanding rivalry between the Pittodrie club and Rangers.
That spell did not produce the breakthrough Cameron would have wanted, but his switch to Dundee United has offered him another chance to make an impression.
Speaking on Go Ballistic on 19 October, Boyd praised the midfielder’s determination to get his career moving in the right direction.
He said: “You might have talent, but if you’re not playing football then it hinders you. You need to be playing.
“He went on loan to Aberdeen. Probably got a taste of playing regular football again. Didn’t quite work out for him, came back, went to Dundee United and he’s thriving. He has really kicked on. Terrific finish as well.”
Boyd’s comments reflect the importance of Cameron’s recent resurgence after finding first-team opportunities difficult to come by at Ibrox.
The midfielder now has a platform to demonstrate his quality week after week, and his latest performances will not go unnoticed by Rangers.
McInnes still has several options in central midfield, meaning Cameron will need to maintain his form if he hopes to force his way back into contention.
However, should the 24-year-old continue to impress at Dundee United, Rangers could face a significant decision over whether to reintegrate him into their squad or consider offers when the summer transfer window opens.
