Steven Gerrard told why he may not be the right man for an EFL managerial role

Steven Gerrard has been told he does not deserve the Wrexham job, despite being backed to get another opportunity in management.

The former Rangers manager has emerged as a possible candidate to replace Phil Parkinson at the Racecourse Ground, with Wrexham struggling to find consistency following their promotion to the Championship.

The Welsh club have recorded just two victories in their opening 10 league matches, increasing the pressure on Parkinson, who previously guided the Dragons through three consecutive promotions.

However, former footballer and pundit Tony Cascarino believes Gerrard should look elsewhere for his next managerial opportunity. Speaking on talkSPORT, he acknowledged the former Liverpool captain’s achievements at Rangers while pointing to his disappointing spells at Aston Villa and Saudi Arabian side Al-Ettifaq.

Cascarino stressed that managerial setbacks are part of the learning process and insisted Gerrard deserves another chance to prove himself. Nevertheless, he drew a clear distinction between earning another opportunity and being the right candidate for the Wrexham position.

Gerrard’s greatest managerial achievement remains his 2020-21 Scottish Premiership title with Rangers, which ended Celtic’s nine-year domestic championship dominance.

Since leaving Al-Ettifaq in January 2025, the 46-year-old has been without a managerial role. With speculation surrounding Parkinson’s future continuing, Gerrard’s next career move remains a talking point among football supporters.
