“It’s Disgusting, Derek!” – Celtic Left Fuming After Controversial Fir Park Penalty Call
Celtic Handball Controversy Explained as Dermot Gallagher Delivers Verdict on Fir Park Penalty Appeal
Celtic returned to the top of the Scottish Premiership table with a comfortable 2-0 victory over Motherwell, although the final score arguably failed to reflect their dominance at Fir Park.
Martin O’Neill’s side created enough opportunities to suggest they could have won by a more convincing margin, but a second-half penalty controversy quickly became one of the main talking points following the match.
Despite a strong appeal from the visitors, referee Steven McLean and VAR official Don Robertson decided against awarding Celtic a spot-kick after Motherwell midfielder Lukas Fadinger appeared to use his arm to block a goal-bound effort from Hoops captain Callum McGregor.
The incident was reviewed by VAR, but no penalty was given, leaving Celtic supporters frustrated by the decision. Although the outcome did not ultimately prevent the champions from securing all three points, questions remained over whether the officials had reached the correct conclusion.
Former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher has since offered his assessment of the incident on Sky Sports’ Ref Watch, suggesting that Celtic had reason to feel aggrieved.
Gallagher believes Fadinger was fortunate to escape punishment after raising his arm as McGregor attempted to find the target. In his view, Celtic were unlucky not to receive a penalty following the controversial moment.
Discussing the incident, Gallagher said: “This is really interesting because when you see it from one angle—Callum McGregor’s angle—his arm looks as though it’s out.
“But Callum McGregor just wants a corner. It’s his back arm as well so if he gets penalised, he gets penalised. I think he got lucky.”
Gallagher’s comments provide further fuel for the debate surrounding the decision, particularly given the involvement of VAR and the opportunity available to the officials to review the incident.
For Motherwell, the decision proved beneficial, allowing them to avoid conceding a penalty that could have made Celtic’s afternoon even more difficult for the hosts.
However, the controversy should not overshadow Celtic’s overall performance. O’Neill’s men were the better side across the contest and deserved their victory, returning to the summit of the Premiership after briefly losing top spot for 21 hours.
Nevertheless, Gallagher’s assessment has added weight to the argument that Celtic were unfortunate not to be awarded a spot-kick, ensuring the Fir Park incident remains a significant talking point despite the visitors’ comfortable win.
