Chris Sutton Drops Major Celtic Transfer Claim as Hoops Fans Await Next Move
Chris Sutton Claims Martin O’Neill Was Let Down by Celtic Over Summer Transfers
Chris Sutton has suggested that Martin O’Neill was not given the players he wanted during Celtic’s summer transfer window, raising fresh questions about the club’s recruitment strategy.
The former Hoops striker’s comments reflect a frustration shared by sections of the Celtic support, with concerns persisting over whether the club did enough to strengthen the squad ahead of a demanding campaign.
Celtic’s summer business was conducted in two separate phases, with several additions arriving before the Champions League play-offs before a late flurry of activity close to the European transfer deadline.
Camilo Duran, Kasper Høgh, Mika Baur and Haissem Hassan were brought in ahead of Celtic’s attempt to reach the Champions League league phase.
However, recruitment subsequently slowed before the club made six further additions during the final 36 hours before the UEFA deadline. Of those arrivals, one was signed permanently for a fee, another agreed a deal until the end of the season, while four joined on loan.
Despite the late activity, the majority of those signings have struggled to establish themselves as regular starters under O’Neill.
Goalkeeper Sam Johnstone initially featured for two full matches but was subsequently omitted from the starting line-up for Celtic’s next three fixtures.
Joel van den Berg and Landon Emenalo have yet to make their first-team debuts, while Oliver Sørensen has started twice without securing a regular place in the midfield.
Shim Mheuka has offered encouraging glimpses during substitute appearances but is still searching for his first goal. Meanwhile, Jordan Lotomba has made two brief appearances at left-back without displacing Marcelo Saracchi as an option in that position.
Sutton Questions Celtic’s Summer Recruitment
Speaking during Sky Sports’ coverage of Celtic’s 2-0 victory over Motherwell, Sutton criticised O’Neill’s earlier admission that he had doubts about continuing in the job.
According to the Daily Record, Sutton suggested that the experienced manager had made a mistake by publicly expressing his uncertainty, although he acknowledged that O’Neill had been honest about how he felt at the time.
However, the former Celtic forward also questioned the circumstances surrounding O’Neill’s position at Parkhead.
Sutton said: “He didn’t get the players he wanted, in terms of trying to compete at the highest level in Europe, so he was let down there.”
Those remarks raise questions about whether Celtic’s recruitment matched the manager’s ambitions, particularly with the club having fallen short of their Champions League objective.
Sutton’s comments may also fuel speculation about the relationship between O’Neill and the club’s hierarchy, although they do not establish precisely which targets the manager wanted or whether specific transfer requests were rejected.
January Window Could Be Crucial
Three of Celtic’s summer recruits — Baur, Duran and Høgh — started against Motherwell, highlighting the contribution of the early arrivals.
However, three summer signings have been omitted from the club’s Europa League squad, further illustrating the challenges surrounding squad building and European selection.
With O’Neill contracted until the end of the season, there remains uncertainty over how much further investment Celtic will make when the January transfer window opens.
The club brought in 16 players during 2026, but only five of those arrivals involved transfer fees, according to the figures outlined in the original report.
That spending pattern raises questions about Celtic’s approach to recruitment and whether the club can provide O’Neill with the reinforcements required to compete consistently at domestic and European level.
For now, Sutton’s intervention has added another dimension to the debate over Celtic’s summer business. The key question is whether the club will respond by backing O’Neill more decisively in January or continue to rely heavily on loan deals and low-cost recruitment.
