Beşiktaş Set “Tears dropping” Asking Price for Ex-Celtic Forward
Beşiktaş are reportedly unwilling to consider selling former Celtic striker Oh Hyeon-gyu during the January transfer window unless a huge offer arrives.
The South Korea international has reportedly caught the attention of clubs in England, with Tottenham Hotspur and Hull City among those keeping tabs on the 25-year-old ahead of the winter window.
However, Turkish outlet Fotospor claims Beşiktaş have no plans to part ways with Oh midway through the season and would only consider changing their stance if an “astronomical” proposal landed on their table.
Oh moved to Istanbul from Genk in February for a reported €14 million and committed his future to the club until 2029.
Although the arrival of Dušan Vlahović has altered his role within the squad, Beşiktaş continue to view the South Korean as an important option in attack.
Vlahović’s injury record is understood to be one of the reasons behind the club’s desire to keep Oh, while replacing him during the January market would also present a significant challenge.
The former Celtic striker has already contributed nine goals in 29 appearances since making the move to Turkey.
Oh’s Celtic spell ended with a lack of opportunities
Oh initially joined Celtic from Suwon Samsung Bluewings in January 2023, but struggled to establish himself as the club’s first-choice striker.
Kyogo Furuhashi remained ahead of him in the pecking order, while Adam Idah’s subsequent arrival created another obstacle to regular first-team football.
Oh later admitted that Idah’s move to Celtic played a role in his decision to seek a departure.
He eventually left Glasgow for Genk in July 2024 after making 47 appearances for the Hoops and scoring 12 goals.
However, his Celtic record does not fully reflect the difficulty he faced breaking into the starting XI, with a significant number of his appearances coming from the bench.
Oh had made it clear that he wanted regular football, and his move to Belgium ultimately gave him the opportunity to establish himself.
He scored 22 goals in 73 appearances for Genk before earning his sizeable transfer to Beşiktaş.
From Celtic frustration to Beşiktaş star
Oh’s development since leaving Celtic has been impressive.
He made an immediate impression in Turkey, becoming the first South Korean player to represent Beşiktaş and setting a club record with his early goalscoring exploits.
His progress has also been rewarded internationally.
The striker continued his rise with South Korea and even scored a dramatic World Cup winner after coming off the bench this summer.
With interest now emerging from England, Oh’s situation could become one to watch when the January window opens.
For now, though, Beşiktaş appear determined to keep hold of their forward.
Only a truly “astronomical” offer looks likely to change that position.
